the bank teller handed this 1978 quarter to me today. It feels like aluminum. No visible copper. Any thoughts? Thank you
Maybe it's from this http://articles.courant.com/1999-11-12/news/9911120186_1_coins-counterfeit-copying
I'll bet it's something like that. Seems like a laborious way to "make" money to me, though -- I'd think if someone were that industrious, they'd be able to find plenty of ways to make money that wouldn't get the Feds after them.
I think you will be ok lol. I'd keep it as an example to compare to in the event you run into any more potential fakes.
There is a Quarter that was stamped out with dime stock planchets,so it is thinner but the correct quarter size. It would also have a low weight. Thing is I cannot remember the date right now , I do know it was early "70's".
I'm not sure how much dime stock punch out as Quarter blanks would weight. I saw Paddyman98 post one of these said quarter awhile back. Not even saying this is what the OP has ,but it's just good information I was passing on. For some reason a date of 74 comes to mind for this error.
I think he meant dime stock was accidentally used to punch out quarter planchets. Seems like I do remember it being in 1974.
