i work as a cashier and dont know much about paper money but ive been pulling the shorter to intermidiate run star notes are they worth anything circulated
Welcome to CT Mike. I actively collect short run star notes but only uncirculated examples. I used to buy good circulated examples to fill holes while looking for an uncirculated example, but quit doing that years ago. I found that collectors that collect from circulation generally do not pay above face to own them, but you may find someone that will. Often times I will see group lots of circulated stars on eBay that sell for a little above face value.
Hi, well, you had better hurry to assemble your collection of star-notes... Rumor has it that there will be no more "Stars" for 2017 and beyond!
I even pull the most ugly star notes from circulation. Mainly because I want additional evidence the government continually makes mistakes.
Hello Dollarsavr, I have heard that rumor as well. How will the BEP handle printings unfit for circulation going forward, or have they engineered mistakes out of the process. HaHa.
The new overprinting presses (ns-LEPEs) that they'll be acquiring won't use star notes: when they catch a defective sheet, they'll pull it out, but not replace it by anything. The result will be that straps of new currency will not necessarily have consecutive serial numbers, and will not necessarily start with a number ending in xxxxxx01. A print run won't produce 6,400,000 notes any more; it'll produce 6,400,000 notes minus rejects. Meanwhile, those defective sheets won't just be destroyed; they'll be saved up for a while and eventually cut into individual notes and run through the Single-Note Inspection equipment that's been processing the 2009 $100's. That way, the BEP will be able to salvage all the good notes from a partially-bad sheet. But there'll still be star notes in Series 2017. The solicitation linked above indicates that the BEP hasn't even awarded the contract for the first ns-LEPE yet, and when they do, they don't expect delivery until 23 months later. It'll be many years before they have enough ns-LEPEs to handle all currency production. Long-term, though, it does sound like star notes will eventually go away.
Welcome to CT! I save stars from fed straps that have no folds or damaged corners. The rest go back to the wild. But as far as eBay goes you can put them up with enough premium to cover shipping and fees and see if you luck out. I throw cool Serial bills up and make 2-3 after fees on them. Not making a fortune, but it does add up. If nothing else your stars will be worth a little more down the road, depending on run, but if you can spare them and don't need to spend them...why not just keep them. Do you know when the 2017 series may be seen in the wild?
I was wondering what the time frame between printing and actually seeing the 2017 series as well. When is a new series generally released? Is it similar to new coins? I mean I started seeing 2017 issues awhile ago...
Remember, they don't change the date on currency every year, but only when there's actually some change made to the notes, like a new signature or a new design. In this case, we'll be gettting a Series 2017 because both signatures will be changing. Rios and Geithner, who signed Series 2013, are both out of office now. The new Secretary of the Treasury, Steven Mnuchin, has been in office since February. A new Treasurer, Jovita Carranza, was appointed several weeks ago, but as far as I know she hasn't actually been sworn in yet. Once she's in office, the BEP will have both new signatures that it needs to begin making printing plates for Series 2017. Based on past new series, we can expect that it'll then take about three months for the first denomination of Series 2017 to start rolling off the presses, with additional denominations following at the rate of about one per month. The length of time it takes for newly-printed currency to make its way into circulation can be quite variable. Series 2017 will probably show up *somewhere* within a month or two of being printed, but if you don't happen to be in a part of the country where the first few shipments of new currency are sent, it could easily take six months or more before the new notes make their way to you. So if you're unlucky, you might not see any Series 2017 currency until 2018.
I'm looking forward to seeing if they're changing anything else on them as well. I still find UNC 09* in fed straps here and there and hope that there isn't an abundance of backup currency that could slow their release into the wild.
