Picked up 6 rolls of cents today at the bank. Aside from a 1959 Memorial, nothing caught my eye. (AU and first Memorial, I still haven't checked any of the coins for errors) however, in one roll, I found 4 dimes and 3 Canadian cents. One of the Canadian cents caught my eye and I knew I had to ask you guys about it. It is a 1983 with Elizabeth on the obverse/m leaves on the reverse. The edge of the coin is multi-sided (i counted 10, think Stop Sign + 2) instead of smooth and the obverse and reverse of the coin are almost 100% more indented than the other two as in the rim seems to be twice as thick with the thinkness of the body remaining the same (one is an 81 and one is 2007, someone went to Canada recently haha). Do any of you guys know if this was common practice for 1983? I'm not at all familiar with foreign currency, however, I have roughly 100 of these 1 cent pcs and none of them has this same edging or amount of indention....but, I also have only this one '83 so I'm not sure. It's a nifty lookin coin, though nothing appears out of the ordinary with it (say like a lincoln popped onto wrong planchet), it's in perfect shape, just different. Oh yea, the inset of the edges has some nice machine type doubling. Jasn
The Canadian pennies were made for several years like that. I don't remember the specific dates, but it was in the early-mid 80s for sure. Sounds completely normal. Sorry.

From 1982 to 1996 Canadian one cents had the twelve sided design. In 1997 the Canadian mint changed the composition to a copper plated zinc, and the twelve sided coin did not hold the copper plating very well so they changed it back to a smooth edge.
