The owl of my childhood dreams

IMG_0072.JPG IMG_0074.JPG I had a small collection of coins as a child, bought with money from a newspaper round (cliche I know...). I always lusted after an Athenian owl, which I couldn't possibly afford then. I sold my collection around the time I started lusting after other things, but when I inherited my father's coins recently I decided to go back to collecting and the first thing I bought was this Athenian owl. I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to collect at first, and this was the one coin that I bought at my first fair. Still an expensive purchase, but now affordable. I sold most of my father's collection, keeping only a few hammered British and a really nice group of Celtic. But I'm pleased to have replaced the two ancient coins I'd always regretted selling: a Faustina denarius with really good bright metal, and a nice Republican denarius with a quadriga reverse.

I've been lurking on the forum for a while, and I'm really grateful for the education you've all provided. It's been a great source as I've started to learn a bit more. Thank you!

Well I bet that you and @FitzNigel will get along well then :)

Welcome to the forum and great OP addition. I really like how your example has Athena's full nose as well as some of the crest visible.

I have posted my Owl too much recently so I will refrain from doing so again (... hint: it's my profile pic ;))

Glad you decided to post and I hope you stick around and share more of your collection with us!

    Cheers

You didn't just happen to buy this coin from a dealer in North Carolina did you? That coin looks familiar. :)

Awesome acquisition @Nerva If there was ever an ancient coin that could qualify as a "One Coin Collection" that would be the one!
