I think I'll be going Friday morning, hunting for some cheap Romans for my classroom excercise (and maybe some medieval style for myself...). Anyone here nearby and maybe going that way?
Nearby, but I'm on the hook for a normal workday Friday. I'll be there Saturday and/or Sunday, but haven't come over to the dark side quite yet...
Now that I have moved, 1,000 miles is too much for me. However, a couple of the Sellers still write me, and I have the opportunity to peruse some of their items.
Well, my visit was short and sweet. A few ancient dealers, but sadly no 'bargain bins' to grab cheap lrbs for my students (at least not any romans - there were some Byzantines, but I'm not going to ask my kids to work in a Greek). Very few medievals as well, which meant a short trip for me (spent more time in the car than the actual show, but I like road trips). I did nab my first gold however: Norman Italy - Sicily Roger II, r. 1130-1154 (1140-1154) Palermo mint, AV Taris, 12.66 mm x 1.1 grams Obv.: Outer Cufic legend denoting date and mint, inner Cufic legend al-malik Rujar al-mu’tazz bi-llah, pellet in center of dotted circle Rev.: Outer cubic legend denoting date and mint, in center, cross potent on shaft with pellet between IC XC NI KA Ref.: [MEC 14.202]; De Wit 3796 The outer legend is not very visible in hand, but bits can be seen enlarged in the picture. I'm going to have to spend some time to see if I can figure out the date (and confirm I have the correct mint... fairly certain I do based on other elements of the design)
Glad to hear it wasn't a bust. Even as enemies the coinage is remarkably similar. Haven't ventured out of the Byzantine culture, but those types are interesting.
