I haven’t posted many coins lately but this little owl coin spoke to me at the Danbury Connecticut show. The coin looks like several from a recent hoard which was cleaned in recent years. Unfortunately, like so many it’s struck a little off center on a tight flan so we miss most of the ΠEIΡA in exergue and the top of Tyche’s coiffure.

I still like the coin (mostly for the owl) & it was quite photogenic.

I bought one of those, too, and now wish I had held off for better centering. There certainly must be a hoard. I have been seeing several and most of off center.

What a great owl! I never noticed before that it was standing on a shield. Very cool. I have an owl coin on its way to me that I'm really looking forward to. That one is standing on a helmet.

    My favorite owl coin:

This rare Cilician obol rips off the reverse of the classical coinage of Athens.

    47479.l.jpg
CILICIA, Mallos. Obol. 425 BC? Weight: 0.73 g. Diameter: 8 mm.
    Obv: Facing gorgoneion.
Rev: MAP. Owl standing left, head facing; olive sprig to right; all within incuse square.
    cf. CNG E-338, lot 103; CNG E-274, lot 160.

The inscription MAP is probably short for ΜΑΡΛΟΤΑΝ, a name of Mallos. A rare Ammon/gorgon of Mallos in the collection of the American Numismatic Society has the same inscription and depicts a gorgon in the same style. The earliest coinage of Mallos is usually given as commencing 425 BC.

I love owls. I even like the modern word for "owl" in Greek: "koukouvagia." Just sounds cool. I've seen the ancient word for it, too, but can't recall what it is right now. Seems to me that it was much shorter. "Glaux," or something like that?

Back to coins: I've sometimes pondered if that should be my collection focus: any and all "koukouvagia."

Well since we're sharing owl videos, how about this? It's an OWL CAFE in Tokyo! If you've never heard of them, animal café's are spreading throughout the world. The idea was originally to give the people in the mega-cities in Asia a chance to be with animals. It started with Dog and Cat Cafes, then moved to things like Raccoon and yes, Owl Cafes. Here you go:

And by the way, it hurts me to the core to see such a violation of wildlife.
Ok, back to coins! Here's my owl:

I've had a "thing" for owls since childhood (and inherited my grandmother's collection of owl figurines, plates, and knick-knacks, to which I've added some).

When I was little, my fascination with owls bordered a bit on terror, but grew into appreciation. I saw my first live owl up close at a wildlife park in Florida when I was four or five years old, and was captivated when it turned its head completely upside-down to look back at me.

This coin, purchased last December, was my first ancient with an owl. As of yet, I still have never owned an Athenian "owl" tetradrachm, because my tastes in those far outpaces my budget! When I finally get one of those, I want it to be a really nice one.

PS- does this owl look a little bit like a winged frog to you? LOL
