Time for a lowball unc registry?

@C-B-D recently started a thread on the scarcity of MS60 grades awarded by TPG's. So, maybe it's time for a lowball registry of different coin types, but they must be uncirculated. The ultimate would be a type set that is all MS60's. Folks will be jabbing their MS63's with ice picks to get them to grade lower. Who knows? MS60's may become worth more than PO01's. :stop:

The PCGS guys were asking for ideas for new registry sets on the CU forum a few months ago. Don't know if this was brought up but it would be interesting. It could raise interest and prices for 60-62 grades

Yeah! Someone could buy a coin for $5 and submit it to PCGS for $40. Then when it came back AU58, the owner could resubmit it in the hopes of getting an MS60. PCGS would sure love it! Right?

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

    This is getting ridiculous....

First there was the "lowball" sets.... weird, strange, backwards, and who would pay a premium for a worse coin?

Then there was the "everyman" sets... highest you could get was AU-58..... I understand the theory, but it was just strange.

Now you want a... what... "lowball everyman"? Sorry.... I don't like it.

It's an interesting idea. Would probably actually be the hardest to complete.

They wouldn't need to - AU58 would work for the Everyman sets!

MS60s are rare for a different reason than PR01 coins.

PR01 coins are inherently rare, as there has to be enough wear for the coin to be devoid of most (all?) detail in devices while still somehow able to determine a date and mintmark (or absence) for the coin.

By contrast, MS60/MS61 coins are rare, since there's NO INCENTIVE to submit them. AU58 coins look better than most coins that would grade MS60/61, so even the concept of a slider is a bit flawed... slider coins would be AU58 or MS62+, depending on the grader. An MS60 coin that was determined to be circulated would likely be somewhere near XF40 in grade.

Suppose they don't want an Everyman set? Besides, that wasn't my point. Would you spend $50+ to grade a $5 coin?

I thought @calcol referred to the PO01 (Poor), not PR01. Or, does it matter?

I'm just saying there would still be a market for the AU58 - their $55 wouldn't be wasted, especially with appropriate eBay marketing. ;)

But, you don't know that. Right? Suppose it is a 1969-D Kennedy?

Depends on which TPG you go to. PCGS calls them PO-01, NGC calls them PR-01. If it was a proof, NGC would call it a PF-01, PCGS would call it a PR-01.

I was making a joke, which is apparently twice lost on you. Let's move on.
