Wow-- that's one of the nicest of its type I've seen! I have one purchased from @Valentinian several years ago. I had purchased several coins for prizes in a contest and ended up keeping this one Numidia (North Africa, southwest of Carthage) King Masinissa or his son King Micipsa 203-148 BCE or 148-118 BCE AE 26 mm, 11.0 gm Obv: Laureate head left Rev: Unicorn Horse prancing left Ref: Sear 6597
Nice coin @Deacon Ray View attachment 629558 KINGS OF NUMIDIA, MICIPSA AE27 OBVERSE: Laureate, bearded head left REVERSE: Prancing horse left, pellet below Struck at Numidia, 118 BC 14.4g, 27mm SNG Cop 505; Mazard 50; Müller 32 Ex JAZ Numismatics
I have owned one or two of these in the past, but it is a series and culture that I literally know nothing about!
Lord forgive me for I am green with envy at @Deacon Ray 's superb OP coin. Thankfully the Lord in all his wisdom did not make an 11th commandment saying "Though shall not covet another man's coins." If that were the case, my soul would be imperiled at this moment.
@Sallent - I have a feeling you actually realize that the catch-all language "or anything that belongs to your neighbor" at the end of that commandment will be construed to have prohibited us from coveting our neighbors' coins as well.
Numidia I've not had, though I've watchlisted a silver piece of one of the King Jubas a time or two on VCoins, et al. As far as North Africa goes, I could post my SeptSev Dea Caelestis again, but won't be tiresome with another of my reruns.
I covet that coin. I TOTALLY covet that coin . But seriously, that's an outstanding example of the type DR...awesome. One of these if very much on the list.
Actually coveted? Like i wish that particular coin were mine and that it did not belong to him or her any longer? I haven't experienced that. I think I read that it is totally acceptable to say to one's self that the particular coin (for instance) the other owns is beautiful and desirable and that I would like to have a coin like it. It is okay to go out and get a similar coin. Somehow, I do not think that is coveting. I forget now where I learned that. Perhaps from a talk by my fave religious scholar - but I'm not sure. It occurs to me that this post may be bordering on religious discussion, so I won't say more on this subject.
Tell me, why is this coin interesting for you, is it rare? Or valuable? Why are you so excited about this coin?
Aethelred—I’m with you. What little I know about Numidia I learned after I obtained the coin in an auction. I bid on it because I liked the horse.
Okay. Let's just say I've seen so many coins of which I wish I had the likes. Is that better wording?
I'm not the Judge. But if I were arguing on your behalf before the "Heavenly court" I would argue that you did not covet.
...ok coveteers..line up... (now open for bizness) oh, and, of course, bring me your best coin(small donation)
