Hello all. Are there known varieties/errors, or anything else to look for in these sets? I just helped someone who needed some quick cash. I have 50 sets, and do want to sell them. Is it worth it to open them to search? Most are unopened, boxed separately from the mint. $5.92 face value per set.(I think) I heard that this is the first year that has burnished finish on them. Yes, 2005 was the first year for the Satin Mint Sets. Each set contained P&D issues of the Sac dollar (2), the Kennedy half dollar (2), the State Quarters - CA, KS, MN, OR, WV (10), the Roosevelt dime (2), the Westward Journey nickels - Bison & Ocean in View (4) and the Lincoln cent (2). I don't know if there were any errors or varieties reported in these sets, but if I recall, there weren't too many SMS(SP?)70's listed in the NGC Census. (I don't know about the PCGS Census.) For the ensuing years, I believe the stats for 70's increased quite a lot. How good are your eyes? Chris
My eyesight would grade VG details. definitely no error/variety hunting capabilities. I really appreciate the information you provided. I just want to know if these are even worth opening up to investigate, or just sell as is. The local coin shop offered very little over face, and did state that he really didn't want them, just doing me a favor. Thanks again Chris. P.S. Any further advice is appreciated. John.
I checked there first and found some that were relatively cheap. Maybe not 50 sets unopened, (47/48 anyway) don't know how much difference/ interest, that makes. Thanks.
It would be a shame to just cut these open and cash them in for FV. I guess I'm not in a hurry to sell, but after 12 years, they're value is established, right?
Like most moderns these are just overlooked. What I'd do is chop the sets up and save the nicest 40 of each quarter and rolls off dimes. Then I'd just save the nicest 20 of the half and nicest few of the dollars and other coins and take the balance to the bank. Doing this you can easily recover 75% of the price while retaining most of the real value of the sets. They'll take up a lot less room too.
one never knows. At some point in the future, an error may arise, but these coins were made using special finish dies, so even in that case, it is unlikely to be any errors in these sets. Mint Set collecting is also currently ebbing, so while I would not advocate for keeping the sets, I wouldn't advocate for spending them either. You should be able to garner some small premium at the present. I'd try to cash out on that.
