Hi everyone! When I saw this coin, I couldn't for the life of me guess where it was from even though I could see the lettering on the reverse (which I smudged out to make it harder for you to identify). I figured out where it was from but I thought you world coin collectors would like to see if you can identify the country in which it was minted (without relying on Google). Perhaps it is not as mysterious to you as it was to me. I'll post the entire reverse if no one names it by tomorrow evening. And no, the coin is not a prize for correctly naming the country. I just thought it would be fun.
Not the easiest to know unless you're familiar with the country. I have actually been to this beautiful place. Won't spoil it for other guessers but here are some hints from my trip
Gee...that was a short competition @MontCollector!! Loll But fun to see your photographs @Curtisimo. Just last night (or maybe the night before, -- I lose track sometimes) I saw how Iceland is drilling down and capturing all that pent up steam and using it for energy! They piped it into a restaurant and in 15 seconds they can have great big pots of raging boiling water. 15 seconds!! It looks like a really cool place. Thanks for those great photographs! Here's the reverse as promised.
Okydoky. Let's make it a little more difficult. This time can you name the following? 1. Country of origin 2. Denomination of the coin 3. The year of minting within 2 years either way 4. The individual depicted on the obverse? I'll post the complete photos of the coin tomorrow evening or after someone correctly identifies it. View attachment 629307
1. Iceland. 1957 2. denomination 25 Aurar 3. minted from 1946, 1951, 1954, 1957, 1958-1963, 1965-1967 4. Krause world coin catalog number KM#11 5. metal-Copper-Nickel 6. size- 16mm
Haha, I thought you were going to give hard coins There are a few folks on CT who have seen lots and lots of world coins and can identify almost any mid 1800s and later on a quick glance.
Yes, 19th century and later is pretty easy, at least for Western coins. The German States can be a bit bewildering at times. India was a crazy patchwork quilt of kingdoms, too.
I like all of those except I will go with 1870. I had a funny discussion a while back about how Austrian coins follow facial fashions. Clean shaven - Side burns - lamb chops - etc.
And some facial fashions get recycled after more than a millennium. I suppose this shouldn't be all that surprising, but sometimes it is.
LoLL. I'm new at collecting and was asleep (or staring out the window) in history and geography classes in high school. I would be happy if someone with knowledge would post interesting coins for us to identify.
3nd coin "Yep! Close enough! 1869" 1. Austria 1869 2. denomination 10 Kreuzer 3. mintage for 1869 - 30,000,000 4. Krause world coin catalog number KM#2206 5. metal- .400 silver cool coin. not very valuable, but very interesting looking.
