Neat looking medal! European... first half of the 20th century, that's my assessment. (Maybe late 1800s at the oldest.) Can't say much more, but it appears to have the name Kunigunde on there. Though I'd guess it to be no more than a century old, the Kunigunde we're seeing portrayed there may have come from a much earlier time. It's definitely seen better days (detector find?), but it's still kind of attractive, in a timeworn sort of way. Looks like it could be silver. I suppose that's a cathedral on the reverse. Anybody else wanna take it from here? That's all I've got.
Thank you, all thoughts are most welcome. Under the cathedrals or castles it says Bamberg. If that helps. It is interesting whatever it is. And yes definitely seen better days.
It could be a religious medal of St. Kunigunde of Luxemburg. There's a statue of her in Bamberg, Germany. This picture of the Bamberg statue looks like the figure on the medal: http://www.pfarrbriefservice.de/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/atoms/image/6955_bild3.jpg
Look! She's even got the same crown on that statue! I love it when people post these older "mystery items" and the jigsaw pieces start falling into place. I had never heard of St. Kunigunde before this, or even heard that name at all.
Yes the statue is definitely a match! I've been trying dig up something on it. And yes the hunt is fun. And you all are pretty quick so thank you all again.
