I use Excel. It does what I WANT it to do. If I want it to do something more, less or different, I just change it.

 

Fantastic...This is my weak spot, my unorganized hoard of coins...I need some help and software is where I was going to look next. That and a better camera with a great macro.....:computer:

Should be a permanent item like cleaning coins.
With Excel the thing to remember is you do not have to buy or download any programs into a computer. In most computers with MS Office it is already there. If you want to show someone something, and your at thier house, office or somewhere besides your house, you could just plug in a floppy, CD or one of those little things for USB ports. Most people do not want you to put a strange program on thier computers. Excel is basically everywhere. If your computer has a problem, crashes, etc. if your info is backed up with Excel, it is always there with a new or rebuilt computer and not have to try to find or buy a strange program.

 

Thanks to Google Spreadsheets, it doesn't even matter which OS you are using anymore. If only I could get excel to print up reports based on certain criteria (not necessarily the same ones every time),and include photos, then it would be perfect. For now, it's just pretty good.

 

Not sure what "criteria" you need, but have you ever tried macros? If thee are several standard printings you need, they will work. i.e. if A = 1, print X, if A = 2, print Y, etc. It is too bad Excel macro's has not caught up to Lotus. I used to make Lotus print reports solely based on the data that was present. Each printing would be entirely different from the previous without my selecting anything - but then I am dreaming.

I have no idea why you cannot include photos. I makes for a massive file, but it is not even difficult.

 

Hmm - coin elite lets you attach photos. It's not too bad but all of the features do not always work. Then market updates costs about $20 - $40 bucks a year. It does what I want and I like it better than my old excel spreadsheet. And yes you can create your own reports.

 

That's one reason why I like WorldCoins by Artecode software. It doesn't do pricing, which I don't really need, but it does let you include photos, but only if you want. It does have customizeable reports too. The only downfall is that I would need to enter the data for most of my countries. That being said, however, it looks like the closest thing that I want in software.

rlm's cents - I am not familiar with macros. I'm off to google that this week and see if that does what I want. If so, then that may be a huge benefit to me. Thanks.

 

Macros are basically a program you write to tell Excel what to do. Pretty much, you write what you would tell Excel to do (set print area, enter data, sort by ?, etc.). Excel stores it and later you tell Excel to execute it. They can get very complicated or be very simple. There are even macros you can download (watch for viruses) or buy. Writing one to sort and them print all Canadian coins, then all 1900's coins, then all coins >$100 or whatever you want one at a time or all at once should not be that involved assuming that you are well familiar with Excel.

The nice part of Lotus was that the macro was part of the work sheet. Therefor the macro could modify itself. I could adjust it according to the data that was in the worksheet

 

Also, with Excel, if interested, you can buy books on how to use it in many book stores. I borrowed one from a place I used to work and it's about 3/4" thick. I read about 1% of it and figured I'm to old for the rest so I use Excel with a limited amount of knowledge.

They have a US, UK and Canadian version. I don't know offhand what the regular price is, but you can download a demo from their website and take it for a test drive. Only downside would be for world coin collectors, as the database is really only for one country. You can add the other two, but that still leaves 200+ countries to enter. It looked great for those collecting a single country, however.

Notice what that is run on - Excel. I am sure that there are more than one macro in it. If you are energetic enough and have the time, you could do the whole thing yourself.

 

I'm loading data into excel currently, but there are a few things I'ld love to be able to do. I have to get a book on excel macros from the library and dig into it. I think I may be able to do wha tI want, at least that's the hope.

I was getting ready to purchase WorldCoins by Artecode software, as it does most of what I want. If I can get excel to get close to that, then I'm all over that. Now all I need is time.

 

I am in the midst of the 30 day trial. I have 7 days left. I do like the software for several things. One of them is the pricing and you can update the bullion spot prices in an instant. I am wondering if it is worth the $49 they want since I just use it mainly to get estimates on prices. Maybe I'll buy it on ebay instead.

 

I find books are great for reference, but hands on is the best teacher. Make a sample worksheet and play with it. PM me if you have a question, but it has been a while since I used them

If you know what you want to do, there is a "record" function with the macros. Turn on the record, do whatever, stop the recording, and save the macro. You can edit it as necessary and use it anytime you want. It will then repeat the steps you just did as you tell it to.
