A new addition to my collection-- Like those of her husband, Aurelian, Severina's coins were struck at several different mints and bear a variety of mint and officina marks to pique one's interest and provide a challenge to the specialist. While I don't have any desire to collect these by officina number or variations on mint mark, I do like to have examples of each reverse type from each mint. This is one from the Serdica mint, which I didn't have yet in my collection. The portrait style is quite pleasing from this mint. Her hair is wavy and plaited in the back, similar to her predecessors, Otacilia Severa, Herennia Etruscilla, and Cornelia Salonina. Severina, AD 270-275 Roman billon antoninianus; 4.01 g, 24.2 mm Serdica, issue 8, AD 274-275 Obv: SEVERINA AVG, diademed and draped bust right on crescent Rev: CONCORDIA AVGG, emperor and empress clasping hands, * in field between them; KA Δ in exergue Refs: RIC 16; MER/RIC temp no 2827; RCV 11703; Cohen 2 Notes: Obverse double strike notable at the forehead and eye Compare the hairstyle and bust style from other mints: Rome: Ticinum: Siscia: Antioch: And Cyzicus (from Ars Antiqva; not in my collection):
Cool. I know I have others but this seems to be the only one I've attemted to photogragh. (I failed miserably ) Hard to believe but these are actually better than the sellers pics.
Wow, I think that's one of the nicest portraits of Severina that I've seen, and overall a really pleasing coin! She usually looks like Aurelian in a wig - not a good look.
What about Lugdunum? Obv:– SEVERINA AVG, Diademed and draped bust right on crescent Rev:– CONCOR-D MILIT, Concordia seated left holding patera and cornucopia Minted in Lugdunum (//BL). Considering Aurelian died during the year this was struck, a year 7 (LZ) Severina 4dr of Alexandria is a good addition to represent the time Rome was ruled, in some fashion, by a woman.
Doug beat me to the punch, and with a nicer example. EGYPT, Alexandria. Severina tetradrachm, regnal year 7. Dikaiosyne.
Very nice and covetable OP Severina. I like the symbol of the flan crack failing to break the concordia handshake. Just one Severina that came in an unidentified hoard. Not such a great coin, but my only example (thus far) of this empress.
