But I love it. Facing portrait, silver, tiny, and has the little crayfish on the reverse. I won it in an auction for my first auction win! Thrace, Apollonia Pontika, late 5th-4th centuries BC. AR Drachm (13mm, 2.86g, 7h). Facing gorgoneion. R/ Anchor; A and crayfish flanking. Topalov, Apollonia 45; SNG BM Black Sea 160–1. VF Anyone else want to share a creepy gorgoneion?
Congrats on your first auction win! A bit nerve-wracking, aren't they? (auctions, that is-- although the gorgons are pretty freaky ). I have one of the general type, a slip of the bidding finger while distracted on a Skype call . Oops. It's grown on me though THRACE, Apollonia Pontika Mid-late 4th century BCE AR drachm, 10 mm, 3.2 gm Obv: Facing gorgoneion Rev: Upright anchor; A to left, crayfish to right Ref: Topalov, Apollonia p. 348, 11
Great coin @wrappedinsky. I really like the facing gorgoneion types but none for me yet. Hopefully soon. @TIF for a slip of the finger that's one nice coin!
Yeah, I was lucky. The lot closed as my finger landed on bid, and the next coin came up-- I didn't even know what I'd won or what it cost until I reviewed the closed lots! Thank goodness it wasn't a 4-figure coin, and it's something I don't mind owning
Etruria, Populonia (3rd Century BC), Silver 20-Asses. 8.34g. Obverse: facing head of Medusa (the Etruscans called her Metus), XX below Reverse: usually blank, but this one has a faint incuse showing the XX and rim of an obverse. (And I have no clue how that would happen!) Vecchi, Etruscan Coinage Series 52.126 (#1219) (O20) is said to be this coin. Ex Baldwin, auction 98, May 2016, lot 551. This coin was sold in the 1957 sale of the Adolphe Menjou collection. He was a Hollywood actor and the best-dressed-man in America. It is doubtful it ever belonged to him though.
Wow, I take it back: Mine's not "creepy" at all compared to the ones you guys are posting! Mine is actually river-nymph-of-Larissa pretty! "Slip of the finger." Oops. Got a new coin. What are the odds? The moral of the story: Stay away from the spirits when checking out an auction. Or not?...LOL
Nice Etrurian XX Asses @Ed Snible ! We have the same die crack... Congrats on your cool new OP-score ... but be careful with this coin-type (they are often faked) So much so, that I spent pretty much the same amount to have my humble example authenticated (at least I have piece of mind) ... plus, the Sear certificate may help my inheritor sell the coin?
I found another CREEP in my collection... SICILY Kamarina Æ Onkia 13mm 1.5g 420-405 BC Gorgoneion tongue - KAMA owl r lizard in claw pellet in ex SNG München 411
Nice coins all. Seeing images like this encourages me to switch over to collecting Greeks. All I have right now are diadachoi coins of Alexander's successors, Seleucids, Ptolemies, Bactria, and a couple I can't identify.
