Looking at their site I think the option I should be considering is their "Reconsideration" service on this page: https://www.pcgs.com/servicesandfees What I'm looking to accomplish is not risk lowering the grade while giving them a chance to reconsider it as PL. Would that be the correct option for me? Anyone have success attempting it? The coin in question is an 81-S Morgan currently in a PCGS MS66+ slab. Adding a PL attribution to it puts it in a somewhat rare category especially for such a common date. That said I don't want to risk losing the "+". I have a tough time taking good pictures but don't want to have a thread without them. All I can say is in person it compares very favorably to a different PL PCGS coin I have so if the pictures don't show it has a chance just believe it's at worst possibly PL and has a chance. The only difference between it and the PL example I have is the rim toning compared to the other blast white one. Does rim toning potentially affect PL eligibility if the fields inside the toning are still very mirrored? Appreciate any help. Here's the coin. It's a stunner in hand and by far my favorite pickup so far and I want her to get the full respect she deserves!
It appears that reconsideration is your best option. One of the choices is an upgrade by suffix (i.e. non PL to PL). You likely could just pick the "any" option, since an upgrade to MS 67 would be beneficial for you as well (even without the added pl). See this diagram from PCGS and read here for more: http://www.pcgs.com/reconsideration/ Remember there is an additional 1% "Guarantee Premium" which "is based off the final grade of the coin according to the PCGS Price Guide. If there is no PCGS Price Guide value, the 1% is based off the Declared Value of the coin as stipulated on the submission form [...]
If the coin was worthy of PL then they would have given it one when they graded it. You have to remember, PL is actually measurable, not a matter of opinion. It is also not one of the designations that you have to request in order to get it. If a coin is PL, or even looks to be close, they simply measure it. If it meets the requirement the coin gets it, if it isn't it doesn't. It's just that simple. So in my opinion, your best option is to forget resubmitting and save your money.
Yeah I understand it's a measurable thing but there still are borderline cases which this one falls into. Well I should say this reverse is borderline, I would comfortably bet my house that the obverse meets the requirements with ease. But I think you're right it's probably not worth the cost and it's staying with me anyways so only difference is two letters on a piece of plastic at this point. Thanks for responses.
They're pretty brutal on PL and DCAM now a days. IF I were to send it back to them I would do a regrade. I do agree with doug in this instance that I wouldn't really waste my money on it at this point, maybe it was a throw in with another submission. If I were to do anything with it I would probably just include it in a CAC submission when I had one
I think I would go this route if I think it had a chance at 67 but it doesn't. It's maxed out at 66+ unless it's eye appeal which is thru the roof got it there but I don't think so. I think you're right though it's one to send when I have others whether to TPG or CAC.
Another thing to consider is that 80's and 8's are graded on a curve. Or graded differently as their strikes. No doubt the coin in question is a gem.... however sometimes it's rough being pretty .
Yep thats why i am confident it's not touching 67. I have another 81-s in 67 to compare side by side and it's just not at that level. Have an 1887, however, in ms67 that the pictured coin compares to all day. Perfect small sample size example of the curve these get.
We think a like on this as again sweet coin but will it make the grade.....that's a crap shoot. Maybe ....maybe not.... I would market it as a better grade in an under graded holder. That way you're justified asking the money without layout of more of yours to obtain the same resolve .
That's the other part it's not for sale lol So that's another big reason to leave well enough alone. I love this coin it would take a stupid number to pry it free. I was just looking at it next to my PL examples last night and thought "you poor girl you're not getting enough respect!"
Actually just thought of another option. Can try and cross to NGC and since I'm confident the obverse is PL can maybe get her into a MS66+* holder. Still have a credit with NGC this year maybe I'll get together a submission hmmm
Yea but if it just crosses at grade then what? Now you're in the hole just trying to get it back to what it was. Don't chase * on crossovers unless you just like writing checks to NGC for fun.
Note that on a cross, you can't set a higher minimum grade than on the holder. NGC might think it's nice enough to add a star, but it could easily come back in the same MS 66+ (and then you'd be losing by spending the extra fees).
Given that this is for your collection, I'd say you are best leaving it as is. If it helps, add a little sticker and write-in "PL" next to the grade. When you decide to sell, then it might be worth it to try and do the reconsideration service at least once.
Nice Morgan! I say leave it be...she looks like she got the plus instead of PL for a bump because 66 looks about right for her. If you crack and resubmit you may lose the plus IMHO. Also, no way they PL a coin through plastic with color like that...they don't crack on reconsideration unless the grade or prefix changes...but if you know PL Morgan's and you know in your heart and mind that she is indeed PL then I say submit for Regrade because you will keep the plus grade regardless if it doesn't PL or does PL and the graders can regrade the coin and repeat a PL Test
Yeah I would definitely never crack cause I don't want to lose the plus for sure. There are sooooo many 81-S 66's out there and she deserves to be a tad ahead of that bunch without a doubt. I don't know for sure if it's PL, I am very confident the obverse is, my hunch is that the reverse just doesn't quite have what it takes but it's close for sure so that was my initial thinking "maybe it was borderline and this time it will go the other direction" type thing. But again as it's staying put with me anyways it's just two extra letters on a piece of plastic so really doesn't matter. IF I ever was forced to sell I would take some kind of steps most likely.
