Well, this doesn't belong here...

Looking over some newly acquired proofs and found this portion of what appears to be part of the designer's initials just west of Independence Hall. Definitely doesn't belong there. Trying to decide if it will bring a slight premium, or drop the grade. Thoughts? 20170518_100710.jpg 20170518_100613_001.jpg

You say this coin is a proof. Is it still in the mint package? The reason I ask is because the mark you are inquiring about looks like it has a raised edge. which would indicate it is not a mint error, but post mint damage.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, proof, still in the case. The entire mark is raised, like a device, with nothing around it to suggest it was pushed up. Wouldn't PMD need an indentation on a side in order push up the mark?

Yes you are correct. So if it is raised like a design, that would lead me to think that there was a indent in the Die that made the coin. And that would be a mint error that could not be easily disputed. As a proof coin it is a minus to value , but as an error it's a plus, proof errors are not really be out there because of quality checks. so I say proof +1, error +1. As to value I can not say.
I am assuming this a bi-cent half dollar.

Thanks for the help!. Yes, '76. I actually have another '76 that has a similar error on the front. Apparently QC was on vacation that day. Glad you think it's a plus!. The coin is perfect, except for that. Off for grading. Again, thanks.

Hi Rob, Please don't be to hasty in sending your coin for grading, It has already waited 40 years. IMHO, I think you should repost your coin under the tittle of
"Proof Error Half" to see if you can get some other info or opinions about it.
I know there are some other members on CT that are very informed about Error coins like yours and may have missed your query due to the tittle.
    Thanks for considering this.
