How often do you interact with your ancients?

Same here. As much as I like having the actual coins in hand, and as safe as I feel in my current location, I'm uncomfortable having my coins in my physical possession for more than a week or so.

Carausius Brother, can you spare a sestertius?

I'm similar to others with safe deposit storage. I always have a couple of new purchases that need to be photographed, weighed, measured or otherwise studied. So, most days I handle some coins or photos of coins. I physically handle my entire collection maybe once a month.

Is instant access by touch (at the risk of safety) really required for enjoyment? I don't think so.

Physical touch is not "essential" ...

=> but I'm glad that I have 'em when I want to roll around on 'em!!

I flip through my albums whenever I buy new coins ... I'll insert the new pages and coins in the albums and then I'll sigh and flip through the albums of awesomeness (daily, weekly) ... occasionally, I'll merely print-off some of your gem-comments and add them into my 3-Ring binders (I'm quite attached to my coins)

Well, Doug and I generally have some communication a few times per week.

Oh, wait. That's not what you meant? Oops. :D

I look at pictures of my coins every day. Some days I also photograph coins or edit coin pictures. I generally handle some of my coins several days a week.

You know, I've thought about this very issue, and there have been long periods (months) in which I've had my entire collection at home.

Ultimately, the answer is that I have to find a balance between my enjoyment of having the coins available to hold and inspect vs. the security of knowing they're safer in the safe deposit box. Plus, it makes the enjoyment of them all the better when I have some or all of them in hand.

As Ancient Joe points out, having good pictures of them goes a long way toward ameliorating their lack of physical presence in my house. I look at pictures of my coins very, very frequently.

In some ways, it's similar to my browsing through all the pictures I took during my trip to Italy last Fall. While it's not the same as being there, doing this inevitably brings a lot of smiles and warm feelings, and helps me relive that trip.

Ummm, I think everyone looks at their coin pictures ... but pictures are kinda like looking at a magazine rather than having a real girlfriend

    ;)

    ... just jokes ...

I am a fan of photos too

I'm with Bing- not nearly enough.

Most of mine are locked away. I do keep a small collection of Greek bronzes at hand so I can show interested guests and flip through them when I am bored. But in terms of my main collection I only see it when I get new coins or a break from the kiddos.

Also, at Metallica tonight (apparently they are cool again).

    Great topic, Aethelred!
My answer to your question is:

"I carry 2,000 year old coins in my pockets."

Pretty much have them out everyday. Right now I'm switching to 2x2 envelopes because I find the album just too bulky, so they're getting a lot more attention the past couple days. I also have them out a lot taking pictures because 9 times out of 10 when I look at old photos I've taken I'm just not happy with them.

Great story! My grandfather had a very expensive bottle of vintage wine that he kept saving for the perfect occasion. He died before the perfect occasion ever came. I don't know what became of the bottle of wine. I swear I didn’t touch it!
