Wanted to know on average per week what people on this site do for coin roll hunting. This includes boxes and hitting the teller trays. I do 4-7 boxes of halves a week and hit around 8-10 teller trays per week. What do others here do?
I am still working on searching the three boxes of allegedly FR sealed rolls of cents. So far I have not found much in the box I have almost finished. How much roll searching I do depends on how much energy I have each day and what else I must accomplish. Last week, for instance, I was down with the flu (or something icky) and had to do some writing, so I couldn't look at cents or even post here too much. This week I am organizing my coins to see how many sets of wheats I can put together, selecting the best specimen of each and organizing the extras so that I can get to them easily if others want or can use them. I got a great number of "S" mint marks in the rolls of wheats I reviewed recently and I want to work those into their 'place' in the collection. And as I have been organizing my cents, (wheats and Lincolns) I am thinking I would like to change the flavor of my collecting and concentrate on obtaining coins from all the countries of the world. Also, I think I would like to collect a specialized subset of ancients I have identified as particularly of interest to me.
I search 2-3 boxes and hit about 3-5 teller trays a week for halves. When I go out of town I try and hit teller trays. Nothing like new territory to get me pumped about CRH.....
Currently I do between six and ten boxes a week. I do have good finds but I just don't post it because I can't take pictures. For example, this year I have found alot of good coins. Multiple silver dimes and nickels. A silver quarter and a morgan silver dollar. I have found two v nickels. I found a indian head cent and a mercury dime in January. I just found a 1888 indian on Saturday and a 1941 mercury dime today. These are just a few examples. I'm still in the hunt, I just don't post my finds.
Usually an hour or two each night before bed. Good weather means I'm outside all day in my flower and garden beds, yard work. And doing a little metal detecting and scavenging for interesting minerals and rocks in my local river. Too exhausted for much more than that. Winter time is another story.
Excuse me, @TexAg, but can you please clarify what 'teller trays' are? You mean tellers at a branch of the bank where you have an account but in a state or town where you don't normally do your banking? Or do you mean that you stop in at any bank, even one where you do not maintain an account, and ask what the tellers have? Thanks if you can explain this to me.
I am sorting my wheat cents with the goal of putting up a give-away - sets of wheats including at least two (P and D) but maybe all three mints. There is a lot of sorting to do to accomplish that and I am not sure how many of each year and mark I'll have when I finish sorting.
I have given up on teller trays, too much work. I'll only do it if one of my tellers calls me and says they have some that were turned in. I used to do a lot of teller searches. Now just Loomis boxes. The beginning of 2017 I was doing 18 boxes of halfs per week. Now I'm only doing 12. 12000 half dollars per week.
Teller trays are a lot of work and exhausting. I have had luck with great scores but some real dry spells too. I do them a lot on my way to my dump banks.
Good question LaCointessa. Early on I tried tellers at banks where I didn't have an account, but most told me they could only sell them to account holders. So now I stick to banks where I have an account, and also hit their branches when I go out of town/state. Also, I've stapled my business cards to zip lock bags of my wife's homemade cookies and passed them out to ALL of my tellers thanking them for providing me with coins or taking my dumped coins. Several have called to tell me they have some half dollars they are saving for me! I will say the cookies are a great way get their attention and they always remember me when I come by later.

I still can get away with getting halves from banks and credit unions in my area that I am not a member of. There are some occasions where they ask if I am a member but 90% of the time they don't. That being said I am a member of two banks and I do get aggressive when I am there asking each teller if they have halves. I do it with a smile though. Most tellers at any bank like to get rid of their halves so they don't have extra stuff to count that is annoying in their trays.
Got inspired by Bman33 & bought $50 in CWRs at lunch time from my bank. The first teller told me she had none, but I asked the second teller who had them. Found (1) 90%er & (1) 40%er. Will try the banks where I don't have accounts to see if my luck continues!
Most of my finds are in BWR. I did however find a few silver dimes including a merc in CWR in December.
