Recently I was browsing thru my Lincoln steel cents and found an unusually looking coin. On closer inspection it looks like a steel cent but is a 1998 D lincoln without any copper cladding. Could I please have your comments?
It's not an error - the copper plating has been removed by chemicals. The general rule is: If it's bright and shiny, it's been re-plated. (on any denomination or metal) If it's dark, dull and grey, it's been de-plated.
If I'm not mistaken a real Lincoln cent missing copper clad would have a weak strike. Am I wrong? Or, the strike would be just as strong as the rest but it would have weaker details.
