    Hi all,

When I view my registry set on NGC, I see something I haven't before, which is that it shows the value in bold red letters and when I hover over it, it has a pop up window that says:

"Price Shown is for a Parent Coin"

    Anyone know what this means?

What sort of Registry Set do you have?

You could always post your question on "Ask NGC".

My guess would be that your coin may be a variety, and the "parent" coin is a coin without said variety (as Numismedia does not generally list variety coin values.) I believe this was answered in an Ask NGC thread from 2012.

Ha ha...no worries, happens to me all the time. I wasn't calling you out, just giving credit to the source. :)

Am I the only one who wishes they would just leave the price guide blank in those instances? In my opinion it does a disservice to have prices listed for a parent coin that isn't necessarily applicable, especially when a good number of people will not understand what that means.

I might agree with you on this, since any sort of variety price guide seems to be completely dissociated from reality anyway. What if instead of listing a price, there was a multiplier associated with a variety? As in, this particular variety usually is valued at 1.2x the parent coin's value... I mean, I think the only prudent way for somewhere like NGC / PCGS to list approximate values for varieties would be to stick solely to completed auctions average for graded coins only with a qualifier that raw coins will sell for less.

I would rather they just leave it blank or do what coinfacts does and show the sale results if something hits the system. It seemed like their response in the thread was just that they don't want to be involved with process of trying to figure out what it should be worth, and really when it comes to varieties a lot of times it is hard to say what it should be until one actually sells.

physics-fan3.14 You got any more of them.... prooflikes?

Yes, it means that your coin is a variety which does not have individual pricing. Variety pricing is incredibly complex, much more so than regular pricing.

I actually do wish that they would list values for the parent coin in my Registry.... many of my prooflike coins don't have individual prices, and rather than giving the price of a regular coin for the date they just leave it blank. I realize the price is going to be different, but I want to have an idea what the issue normally sells for - I'll figure out the specifics!
