Having read some of the history on Valens I have wanted to get a coin of his. I was watching this for the last several days and then won the auction today. I usually do not have to up my bid too many times in a Naville auction, but I did to get this one. It is a scarce coin. There is one example in the CNG archives, and a total of 3 on acsearch including the CNG example. Please post your solidii or your coins of Valens. Oh well, that is another historical figure off the list. It is not a problem free coin, but it is still attractive imho. @Bing I know you have one of these. Please post it. Valens, 364-378 Solidus Nicomedia circa 364-367, AV 20.5mm., 3.93g. Pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust r. Rev. Emperor standing facing, head right, holding labarum and Victory on globe. In exergue, SMNS. RIC 2b. Dep. 13/2.
Wow @Orfew nice capture on Naville! That is a great looking coin, I love it! Andd, you are becoming the GoldMeister recently! Nice. I scored a couple GREAT coins today, one very rare also! I do not know if you were watching the Live Bidding, but they were BLOWING through the bids... I am not sure if folks were watching as a major marketplace (North America) were celebrating Mother's Day when Live Bidding started at 10AM CST / 11AM EST... I could not believe how FAST coins were hammering... some were back-and-forth, but many, that I expected to bid-UP, just blew through at OPENING. Both of mine were at opening bid or at my pre-auction winning bid !
Thanks for the kind words. Yes, this will be my 5th gold coin. As for the bidding, yes, I did notice this. I watched most if not all of the live bidding. Unfortunately every one of my targets was bid up and up. However, the ones I did not want seemed to sell on the first bid. Some lots even went without bids at all. I wonder if anyone scored any of those Dattari coins. I bid on one, but I was saving my energy for the Valens. The Dattari coins again seemed to go for good money, but I do not think they were as high as the Dattari bids in the last 2 Naville auctions. That might just be my impression however. I am looking forward to seeing the coins you won.
I got this one as it is SINISTER to my right facing same Quinarius: Octavian as Augustus, 27 BC – 14 AD Quinarius Emerita 25-23, AR 13.5mm., 1.79g. AVGVST Bare head r. Rev. P CARISI LEG Victory standing r. to crown trophy. C 387. RIC 1b Scarse. Toned. Very Fine. (Got it for my pre-live bid...) My Right facing that I have: Won at their opening bid: I was SHOCKED (yeah, maybe it was the "right price" for the condition, but USUALLY you get BIDDING. Egypt, Alexandria. Dattari. In the name of Livia, wife of Augustus Diobol circa 1-2 (year 31), Æ 23.5mm., 7.46g. Draped bust r. Rev. Athena standing l., holding Nike and leaning on shield; L-ΛA. Dattari-Savio Pl. 3, 60 (this coin). RPC pag. 692, 5 (this coin cited). Very rare. Nice brown-green tone. Very Fine From the Dattari collection. In our opinion is correct the interpretation of Dattari on this coin and the date shown on the Rev. is L-ΛA and not LMA as suggested from RPC. Checklist: - Livia - did not have: CHECK - Provenance - CHECK x2 - Plate Coin - CHECK x2 - Rarity - CHECK Now have 142 Roman Rulers...
@Alegandron Wonderful pickups! Wow, you have added a couple of real treasures. Congrats my friend! I love both the Livia and the sinister coin.
Sweet gold, folks. All I have to show is this rather humble silver piece. Valens, AD 364-378. AR Siliqua, Treveri, 367-378. Obv.: D N VALEN-S P F AVG; Pearl-diademed, draped, cuirassed bust right. Rev.: VRBS ROMA; Roma seated left on cuirass, holding Victory set on globe in her right hand and spear in her left // TRPS• Reference: RIC IX 27b and 45a.
Neither did I. I halfheartedly made a priority list but the coins I wanted were bid higher than I wished to go so I turned off the auction before the Dattari lots even hit the block. Budget was another reason. I've bought >40 new coins in the last month
Wow, I did not show my Valens! ('taint GOLD, but it's all I have.) RI Valens AD 364-378 AE Red Follis Siscia Mint RI Valens 364-375 CE AE 17mm Reduced Folles SMAQS Aquilea mint @Orfew ... did it take 100,000 of mine to equal just one of your Gold beauty?
