There's some sweet coins posted here. I would like to grab a few more middle ages coins but right now the ancients just take up all my budget. This one is the only coin I own that fits in the time period of this thread. Hungary Wladislaus II 1490-1516 AR Denar 16mm .5g Kremnitz mint?
Great Coin Ajax! Yes you should dabble a bit more in medievals! I need more peeps to share and talk with on here in that area
Who copied who? The Byzantine Empire or the Venetians? Clearly one of these two coins copied the other one rather heavily.
I love the medieval myself - although I sometimes wish there was a greater artistic variety. Most (particularly French and English) just show a cross and legend. German Coins are a bit of an exception (my profile coin bing an example). I guess that also leads me to my newest acquisition from JA, since it very much follows some medieval iconography (particularly equestrian seals) Norman Italy - Calabria Roger I, r. 1072-1101 (1098-1101) Mileto Mint AE Trifollaro, 28.04 mm x 8.3 grams Obv.: ROG [ERVS] COME +S. Roger, mounted left wearing Norman helm, holding kite shield and striped banner Rev.: + MARIA [MATE]R DNI (’N’ retrograde). Enthroned nimbate Virgin Mary holding on lap Christ child, nimbate and in swaddling clothes right Ref.: De Wit 3789 I'll reserve my additional thoughts on the coin for a larger write-up later (and my apologies to my competition for this coin... this has been on my want list for a while!)
Close call, poor Edward just missed getting shot in the head by a Danish warrior's AK-47. It is a fantastic coin. I wish I had one like it in my collection. I'm envious.
Great Coin! I love any medieval that has chivalry attributed to the coin ( Knights, Shields, Horseback, Swords etc)
Wow very interesting Salient! The two are very similar so one must have copied the other...unlesss...ALIENS!
I don't think I'll ever get tired of showing this one off . . . Medieval Croatia (Ragusa): silver grosso portraying St. Blasius and Christ, ca. 1372-1438 Obverse: S BLASIVS RAGVSII, Saint Blasius standing, facing, raising hands in benediction and holding crozier. Reverse: IC/XC, Christ standing facing, raising hand in benediction and holding Gospels. Ex. Künker am Dom (Künker Numismatics AG, Munich); @lordmarcovan
I always wonder why a coin like this was holed. The damage doesn't really bother me all that much. It's part of the coins history.
Holy Crap that is a fantastic coin! Congrats on that find and adding to your collection! Love the two figures!
Thanks would have to go to our fine member @lordmarcovan who found this coin - I was just lucky he was willing to let it escape his Box of 20!
I'm really enjoying seeing all these medieval coins posted. I hope we see more in the future. There are not many of us but we seem to be a dedicated group.
Probably to tie the coins to weapons, armour, or clothing to be used as decoration, or as a necklace. It was a very common practice. You see that too with a lot of Roman coins. I don't mind the hole either, considering how expensive the unholed version would be. It is still a fantastic coin, and the portrait is intact (which is what matters the most).
That is a great Theobald II @stevex6 I picked up a similar example but it pales in comparison to your coin. Here is another half groat of Edward III. Edward III AT Half Groat Treaty Period 1361-1369 AD Calais mint Obv: EDWARDVS REX ANGL DNA GOV Rev: POSVI DEVM ADIVTOREM MEV long cross w/ trefoil pellets VILLA CALESIE SCBC.1623
Nice Coins! I really love the Theobald ii Coin you have there! The imagery is perfection..I need to find myself one!
Great coin @FitzNigel That is a superb example for the issue. After reading the John Julius Norwich history of Norman Sicily I have really wanted to get a few of the coins of Roger Bosso and his brother Robert Guiscard. I've seen several other people reference JA. I assume that is John Anthony. Does he have regular auctions, and if so where can they be viewed? From everything I've read on here the coins sound like they are always of great quality.
