I wish there was a designated area in forums for medieval / dark ages / renaissance coins but for now Ancient Coins is the shared category.

Figured I just show everyone the new coin I just won at auction. This is my very first ever Groat and I am very pleased to have it in my collection now.

Let me know your thoughts and please post / share any coins you may have that are similar of the period! :D

    Edward III Groat

    Cross l Pre-Treaty Era

I don't collect these, but your example seems to be in good condition from what I've seen. Congrats.

I'd rather not. There wouldn't be much activity in a medieval section plus everyone I know primarily spends time in the ancients forum. I think a better solution would be to change the forum name to "Ancient and medieval coins".

Anyways I don't really collect English medieval (yet), but I did recently pick one up just for the heck of it:

    Edward I, Kingdom of England
    AR penny
Obv: EDW R ANGL DNS HYB, crowned and draped facing bust, legend around bust
Rev: CIVI-TAS LIN-COL, long cross, tri-pellets in angles, legend around cross
    Mint: Lincoln
    Date: 1280-1281
    Ref: SCBI 39 (North), 168; North 1022; SCBC 1393

Nice groat. Yea, most of us medieval collectors collect ancient coins and hang around here. The folks that only collect ancients don't seem to mind us discussing our medieval coins. William III AR Penny Willem on Cant S-1362A Class 3a2.jpg Aethelred II S 1151.jpg

The bottom one is Aethelred II. I'm away from my desk right now and don't have the full attribution available.

Wow I haven't gotten that early with the English Kings yet. That was a little after 1000ad! If you don't mind me asking, what's the value of a coin like that in such condition? Looks really good!

You can probably find a pretty nice one for between 3 and 400 dollars US. The coins of William I through the earlier coins of Henry II are a bigger challange. Coins of Cnut are not too bad either.
