I wish there was a designated area in forums for medieval / dark ages / renaissance coins but for now Ancient Coins is the shared category. Figured I just show everyone the new coin I just won at auction. This is my very first ever Groat and I am very pleased to have it in my collection now. Let me know your thoughts and please post / share any coins you may have that are similar of the period! Edward III Groat London Cross l Pre-Treaty Era 1351-1361 4.28 Grams 26mm Diameter
that's a nice coin from the era. i have a few medi's, i'll dig them up and post'em on here later. most of the peeps, me included, are into the ancients big time, but i do like these type coins too
I'd rather not. There wouldn't be much activity in a medieval section plus everyone I know primarily spends time in the ancients forum. I think a better solution would be to change the forum name to "Ancient and medieval coins". Anyways I don't really collect English medieval (yet), but I did recently pick one up just for the heck of it: Edward I, Kingdom of England AR penny Obv: EDW R ANGL DNS HYB, crowned and draped facing bust, legend around bust Rev: CIVI-TAS LIN-COL, long cross, tri-pellets in angles, legend around cross Mint: Lincoln Date: 1280-1281 Ref: SCBI 39 (North), 168; North 1022; SCBC 1393
I don't have much from the 14th century (I mostly focus on the 12th century). Here are my three though: Crusader Greece - Epirus John II Orsini, r. 1323-1335 (1325) Arta Mint, AE Denier, 18.53mm x 1 gram Obv.: +IOhS DESPOTVS, cross within inner circle Rev.: (+D)E ART(A C)ASTRV, around castle Ref.: Roberts 5338 Italian States, Genoese Caffa 1360s?; AE Pul, 17.29mm x 1.3 grams Obv.: Christogram countermark, from Genoese Caffa Rev.: ? anonymous Jujid Ex Andy Singer East Africa - Kilwa Sultanate al-Hasan ibn Sulayman, r. 1310-1333 Kisiwani mint, AE Fals, 20.13 mm x 2.2 grams Obv.: احسن بن / سليمان / عزذصز (al-Hasan ibn / Sulaiman / yathiku (May his victory be glorious!)). Inscription in three lines Rev.: يتق / بالواحل / النان (trusts / in the One (God) / the Bountiful). Inscription in three lines Ref.: SICA 10, #616, Freeman-Grenville 1954, pg. 223 no. xv, Walker obv: XVII, Rev.: XXIII, Album 1183 (Anyone may feel free to correct my Arabic inscription - the English translation has been pulled from books, and I attempted to imitated the Arabic from books as well, but I fear it might be jibberish...)
I haven't shown this in a while so what the heck: FRANCE, FEUDAL, Valence, Bishops of Valence and Die, Denier OBVERSE: Stylized angel facing, +VRBS VALENTIAI REVERSE: Cross annulet in fourth quadrant, +S APOLLI NARS Struck at Valence, FR, 1157-1276 1.18g, 19mm Boudeau 1021
Nice groat. Yea, most of us medieval collectors collect ancient coins and hang around here. The folks that only collect ancients don't seem to mind us discussing our medieval coins.
Very nice. Got one of him too. Edward III, (1327 - 1377 A.D.) AR Groat Pre-Treaty O: Plain Cross, HENRIC' DI' GRA' REX ANGLIE Z FRANC, crowned facing bust, rosette and mascle stops. R: CIVI (mascle)TAS LONDON(pinecone), long cross pattée; three pellets in angles, pinecone and double saltire stops London Mint 28mm 4.03g
Great coins! I have a Henry III as well, but what is the bottom coin attributes? It's a very nice looking coin!
The bottom one is Aethelred II. I'm away from my desk right now and don't have the full attribution available.
Wow I haven't gotten that early with the English Kings yet. That was a little after 1000ad! If you don't mind me asking, what's the value of a coin like that in such condition? Looks really good!
You can probably find a pretty nice one for between 3 and 400 dollars US. The coins of William I through the earlier coins of Henry II are a bigger challange. Coins of Cnut are not too bad either.
