Just picked up this 1882 Morgan and was considering sending it off for grading. Was hoping to get some thoughts about whether or not it would grade as Proof Like as well as general thoughts on grade. Also curious as to how the dings on the rim will affect the grade.
    Thanks!

Prooflike is a measurable quantity and as such isn't really open to speculation. But, when you all have are pictures to go by well then speculate is about all one can do.

That said, imo that coin is not PL.

It's not worth submitting, unfortunately. Please do understand that submitting must add something to a coin of at least equal value to the cost of admission for it to even be a worthwhile consideration. This can be anything from authenticity to increased liquidity and everything in between, but also means plastic a waste for a majority of coins out there. With yours in particular, while a fine and perfectly collectible coin as-is, it's simply not of the level where submission should be considered.

While not meant as a defense, I'm sure he was trying to show the coin in its best light (so to speak). That said, may I ask what your hopes for the coin were? Did you buy with the plans to submit or...?

Well, I was really just taking a chance on one of the many coins billed on eBay as Proof like in hopes that it would actually turn out to be such. I didn't pay a ton for it (about MS63 money) and realize it was a crapshoot. So many DMPL coins on eBay sell well out of my budget but this "PL" coin was attainable so I went for it. I prefer raw coins because I like to be able to hold them but realize slabbed are much more predictable.

Looks like it has a shot but that's the best we can tell you from pics

At 63 money, Prooflike or not, you're in pretty good shape with this one. At worst, even if not PL (purely a function of the reflectivity of the fields) it's a mighty nice looking example of the type and certainly one I wouldn't kick out of my collection as a 63.

Any advice on the best way to photograph coins with an iPhone? Lighting seems to be the real issue.

I honestly think you should return the coin, for 63 $$ you can do alot better than this.
I dont think it makes PL and think 63 might even be a stretch, for $30-$40 it would be alright though. IIRC this is a semi better date, and for THAT kind of $$ you could have actually bought a slabbed common date 63PL

When I said PL was measurable, I meant that quite literally. Which means you can test it yourself.

To qualify for PL you must able to read, and read clearly, standard sized text reflected in the surface of the coin held at a distance of 2 to 4 inches away from the coin. While you are at least 12 inches away from the coin. And this must be true of both sides of the coin.

For DMPL you must able to do the same thing at 6 to 8 inches.

Now some may argue and say if you can read text at anything over 4 inches it's DMPL. But the qualification depends upon who you ask.

Are you thinking a standard sized text is a 10 font? Not debating, just asking.

that you GDJMSP, best definition yet I've always question the precise term for PL and DMPL.
