1937 Buffalo Nickel - DDR Tail?? Just MD / DDD?

Is this a DDR on the tail? There's some very clear separation, and in fact, the second picture shows a tail that appears to have the doubled part itself doubled with MD. Or, is this common for the year?

    Thoughts? Thanks in advance!

And the base of the tail looks like a duck's webbed foot!

To me it looks like the detail may have been fixed on the die.
