I was looking through the coins I bought from my Grandma's friend, and I found a 1946 S Roosevelt Dime that appears to be the Sans Serif mint mark....According to the Cherrypicker's guide, there were only two known at the time of printing!!

Do you think this is indeed the variety? The first picture is my coin, the second is the Cherrypicker's guide.

Thanks, I hope we're both right!! Also, anyone have an idea on what a value could possibly be for such a rare variety? ( If it is indeed the variety)

It looks sorta like it to me. different types of MM varieties are not my forte by any means, but it looks like it could very well be. Maybe that variety is so rare, because nobody can even see it that small! :goofer: Good eye!

I have to go with the general consensus here and say that it does indeed look like you made an AWESOME find.

Let's hope so. Time to get it certified.

    Good job!

Crap. I just got an Email from the Coneca guy....

"Circulated coins can be tricky to attribute. However, I believe this is the standard trumpet tail mintmark style.

    Thanks,

I actually don't agree with his assessment though....=/ I don't think it looks like a trumpet tail...

I know..but it does say the trumpet tail is flared like a bell. Yours doesnt seem to be that IMO

Yeah...Perhaps I should just send it to ANACS or something....would they certify something like that?

    hamman88 Spare some change, sir?

Shouldn't disagree with THE expert. IMO, they look very different.

More recent research done by Bill Fivaz on San Francisco mintmarks and the years in which each were employed suggests that the “knob-tailed” style was used in 1946 and then discontinued. Observation seems to back this assertion as examples of “knob-tailed” mintmarks on coins from 1947 to 1955 appear to be nonexistent. Fivaz also reports that a third style of mintmark known as the “sans-serif” was used in 1946 and 1947. The “sans-serif” style is reported to be extremely rare on coins from 1946.

Ok, I have examined the coin more closely in hand and I think I have to agree with James...It's a trumpet tail. Oh well. At least I got a 1928 Peace Dollar and 1916-S WL half today on the cheap =p
