Still have a big love for Medieval coins, picked up this common type of Louis I since I didn't own any of him. Louis I (Ludwig I) (1342-1382A.D.) Hungary AR Denar O: +MONETA LODOVICI, Head of Saracen left. R: REGIS HVNGARIE, patriarchal cross. .6g 15mm
Great coin Mat! From Wikipedia Saracen was a term widely used among Christian writers in Europe during the Middle Ages. The term's meaning evolved during its history. In the early centuries AD, Greek and Latin writings used this term to refer to the people who lived in desert areas in and near the Roman province of Arabia, and who were specifically distinguished as a people from others known as Arabs.[1][2] In Europe during the Early Medieval era, the term came to be associated with Arab tribes as well.[3] By the 12th century, "Saracen" had become synonymous with "Muslim" in Medieval Latin literature.
i always thought that was an interesting obverse, i didn't know who it was...and now that i do i don't really understand it...but one of the type is on the list for sure!
The Saracen head is very neat. I saw this one in the World Coins "newp" thread. You know I like Hungarian denars. This one is earlier than any I've had. I seem to recall sending you one, back in the day, which was perhaps old enough to be undated, but not quite so old as this? Swap ya my group of Niblets for your single one?
Lol, not a fan of coin, I do eat them though. And yup, you did & I still have it. It's the one with a clashed die. "_
Check out your typo/autocorrect goof in that response to my corny joke. Your response is both hilarious and oddly contradictory. LOL (Or cointradictory?)
