Here is a coin that I have owned for about 10 years, I bought it from a good friend and retired dealer named Ronnie Willinger who sadly is now in poor health. It is a Laodiceia Mint Denarius of Septimius Severus that was minted from AD198-202, it is RIC IV 503. Please use this thread to post yours, comment on mine or say whatever might be on your mind.
That is a good photo of an excellent example. The Laodicea denarius below is just a bit later (202 AD) showing the newly assumed COS III on the reverse. RIC 504 describes the coin but I fail to understand why RIC did not separate it from the COS II coins as they would usually have done for a new date. After listing this one COS III coin they return to listing several other types with COS II. Later that year the mint switched to the SEVERVS PIVS AVG legend but kept the reverse. Shortly after this change, the mint was closed leaving RIC 526 (below) as the only coin with this obverse from Laodicea.
Beautiful coin @Aethelred. Looks like you just minted it yesterday. I only have one SS coin struck at Laodicea. It was once part of the Doug Smith collection. I'm not sure why he wanted to part with it, but I'm glad he did. SEPTIMIUS SEVERUS AR Denarius OBVERSE: L SEPT SEV PERT AVG IMP IMP II, Laureate bust right REVERSE: BONA SPES, Spes advancing left holding flower and lifting skirt Struck at Laodicea, 194 AD 3.1g, 18mm RIC 4a, SS 444, p. 151 Ex Doug Smith collection, #892; ex JAZ Numismatics
It was a mistake. I'm going through my boxes now looking for more soon to be JAZed coins but keep finding things that I know I will regret selling. I just have too, too many.
