I think I found my 1st "Woody" cent. Got it out of a CWR i got at small bank today. The whole roll was LWC's. Not the greatest condition, but still a neat find.
This effect is caused from an incomplete or inproper mix of metal that makes up the composition of an alloy. And then when the metal is rolled out to a designated thickness it stretches it and leaves lines which tarnish at a different rate, and gives a coin a woodgrain look. Usually striped, but not allways. Here is a French made coin from Uraguay with such an effect.
Nice find you may want to give it a soak to remove any of the green spots in the date and a few other areas.
So I decided to soak this coin in acetone to try to clear the MM out. There is a possibility this could also be an RPM. Well it didn't work, guess I'll have to get some Verdi-Care. It did bring out the Obverse more. Here is a before acetone (Top) and after acetone (Bottom) photo.
