This item is worth a look . . . http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Forgers-...238838?hash=item33cda16636:g:LXoAAOSw9GhYcDfg Love to hear your comments?
I see forger's clay molds on CNG auctions from time to time. Must be an interesting find in archaeological digs. Kind of ironic too, knowing that people have been trying to forge financial instruments for a very long time. Nothing changes.
Thanks, Guys. (esp. @THCoins) I have never seen one before, (and I am not about to bid on this one). With all of the discussion of and about 'fakes', this is the first 'forger's mold' I have seen. Quite interesting, in a way.
Oh, I think you guys are really missing the point here. Moulds such as these are very common, but they are contemporary moulds and thus ancient. No, they are not official mint issues but they are still ancient. These are more common their Roman counterparts (which also come up for sale periodically). Having said all this, I have my suspicions on the Ebay example. If you look at the edges of this example you will see that there are some sharp and clearly defined lines in folds which would seem to indicate that it was pressed into sheet plastic.
