As I've been going through my boxes of halves for silver, I've been pulling out the 1974Ds then looking at them in search of a DDO. I think that by now I've looked at about 600 1974Ds and (I think) haven't found one yet. I'm not sure how commonly these are found in circulation - what has your experience been? And...once you do find them, does is there any market for them? I see a lot of MS on the bay... Thanks!
I looked through rolls/bags for years and didn't find any. So I bought a graded one off eBay to just get an idea of what it would look like in hand (this was a looooong time ago, when my Cherrypicker's teeth weren't fully formed.) As soon as I had it in hand, for whatever reason, I found like 25 over the next few months, as well as a handful of 1977 D DDO. That was in Salt Lake City. I've never found a single 74D anywhere else.
I think I just refuse to pay the price, There might be a few in a couple rolls I have. Noth'in I have confirmed yet.
I have yet to find one... probably have gone through maybe 60 boxes this past 10 months or so. I have found 2 1982-Ps missing the FG though.
Good information. Thanks to you all for your replies. Sounds like these are much less common than I thought they were.
I have found (10) 1974-D DDO after searching about 16,000 coins since I started paying attention to this coin. That's only 0.06% success rate. I live in Texas where we get a lot of Denver coins so that probably helped my odds somewhat.
This shows the PCGS population to be over 800. I am sure many more have not been graded, or graded by other companies. There are probably thousands of these 1974-D DDO, still rare. http://www.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/96723
