Not set up to take pictures of my coins yet, but am working on it. I just got a Google Pixel XL phone yesterday, so maybe that will work? Any advice on taking photos?
What we need here on CT is someone who has worked enough with phones to advise those who insist they will not buy a camera. I have taken a couple phone photos and decided that I have better things to do than practice more since I do have a camera. Who will step up? Did anyone ever try one of those clip n selfie ring lights discussed here a few months ago?
I think @Ken Dorney bought and posted a thread on one. @ancient coin hunter phone pics can be done and Doug is right it takes practice and time to edit & sort through multiple photos to see if you got one you're happy enough to say you took it. Play with lights every coin and both sides differ. It to me is a pain in the rear, but I still often use my phone because its handy. I use an outdated s6. But have a decent canon digital, its not handy and forget the model.
I purcased a macro lens for my Samsung about a year ago. After several attempts, th thing was placed in a desk drawer and it's not seen daylight since. I prefer my camera setup. Much easier for me.
That is the point. We have heard from several people who want to use a phone but most of us who have tried both stay with the camera. I was looking for that person who likes their phone well enough that they chose it with full knowledge rather than saying it was good enough and they had no intention of being a photographer. That person can help the new phonetographer better than those of us who have no interest in the subject.
I only use my phone now(Iphone 6). I am just happier with the results overall. I don't like the ring on most of my coins, they tend to loose detail and look flat. It's nice to have on the go tho. I also have a macro lens but didn't like the results, at least with coins. Heres the set up I use. Heres examples taken from my phone. Not the best
Aww jeeze thanks @TIF I use one LED light - get into my minimal movement position phone held with both hands and elbows on knees and snap the picture once the lighting corrects its self on the phone. shooting on a matte surface helps tremendously. I use MS paint to mend the two photos together and then I use http://pixlr.com/editor/ to manually paint in the background it works for a variety of metals and surfaces.
