I just received my latest purchase from CNG but before I won it I did some research on similar coins. I found that there was little variation in the size but drastic variation in the weight of the same denomination. All coins listed as tetrachalkons, all coins 19-20mm, all coins from around the same date. Weight 2.56-6.45g My latest: And comparable coins: Is this normal for AE or was this simply the product of sloppy minting practices? Thanks for any insight. Jim

Ummm, I only have one Tetrachalkon example (here it is for comparison) THESSALY, Larissa, Æ Tetrachalkon Circa 356-337 BC Diameter: 19 mm Weight: 8.60 grams NOTE => my example is a bit of a monster compared to your Tetrachalkon, but my example is a few centuries earlier
Usually the weight is fairly constant, but the diameter varies ... However, I have heard some folks say that they probably had a certain "hunk" of metal that was meant to produce "X" amount of coins, so occasionally the weight of the coins within the hunk could vary somewhat (do you think that explanation would hold-up during my thesis defense?) => congrats again on scoring that super cool addition
Maybe I should clarify that I own only the 1st coin. The other 3 are just researched from CNG archives.
