Hello all, been a while since I posted. I was one of the folks who ordered a 2017 mint set and got the BACKORDER status a few hours later. Today, I see the mailman dropping off a package on the steps. "YAY" I think as I am expecting a mint condition set of the 1938 presidential series of stamps (a burgeoning side passion). Instead, it's a package from the Mint with the three sets of coins that I ordered. Why did I order three?....I have no idea. I think I just got carried away. Anyway, now comes the guilt. I was so mad when I saw that Backorder status. I cursed the big coin companies who have hundreds for sale. I swore I would never buy a coing from a profiteer! And then I revolve back to why the heck I bought three. I don't need them all, I'm not a hoarder and I wasn't out to make a quick buck. So I'm asking you folks. As numismatists, what would you do with the extra coins? Would you trade them? Sell them at cost? Ebay (aka gouging the willing public)? Keep them? Wondering your thoughts. BTW, gift is out. I don't have any numismatists for friends and it wouldn't be truly appreciated for anything other than being a pretty coin. My kids would probably Ebay the coin before I could blink. As always, your comments are appreciated.
There is nothing wrong with making money by supplying people with a coin they missed out on. Just see what the lowest one on eBay is listed for sale and price yours $5 or $10 less and you'll have circumvented the "profiteers" and made a fellow collector happy.
I think that may be a feasible strategy. If I go with that approach, I'm pretty certain that it'll be a numismatist not a profiteer.
Sell the coins for a modest profit and give yourself a break. You don't have to ask moon money, but if you discovered a $500 bill laying on the street, I don't expect that you'd just leave it there.
I will happily buy them from you for the original sale price plus shipping But really, just ebay them. Do it as an auction with a starting bid high enough to cover the fees and you shipping cost from the mint. Let the buyers figure out how much they want to pay for it.
Yeah, what Mike said...........you're entitled to make a few bucks. I look at like this: The ones I sell pay for the one I keep in my collection.
Why not keep them? Who knows what they could be worth a few years down the road, with the proof '95 W at 30,125 and the next lowest being the proof 2012 S at 281,792 these could turn out to be a winner.
Thanks for the feedback. I am on the fence between lowest buy it now, less 15 or going with the market and letting them pay what they will. @green18 I will view it as a means to support the other coin...I wish the mint hadn't botched this thing so badly! That would put the coins at 115 a piece which is well enough to pay for the third coin after fees. 115 would also cut out anyone looking to flip. To tell the truth I think this "rarity" will be gone with the limited edition silver set release.
Well now. That was quick...I put them on Ebay for Lowest Buy It now price, less 15. It took about 15 minutes to sell. I wasn't quite expecting that! Looks like someone felt that they got a a good deal at 115, and I certainly was able to get my third coin free at that price. Thanks for the advice. I may have gone low, but heck life is short. Good knowing that other's in the hobby don't look down on the practice. Though, hopefully the Mint will handle the Limited Edition Silver release a little bit better. Great news is I can recycle the Mint Packaging for my shipment! Thanks again!
You're a horrible capitalist, but that's ok. At least you are one I didn't realize these were down to around 125. They were around 170 last I checked.
Yeah, I think whoever bought them was going to flip them anyway. They had over 5K reviews...not thinking it's the little guy. Anyway, Horrible capitalist or not; I got my coin for free plus a few bucks and did the right thing (at least in my head). Now I just got to get rid of that gold dime from last year...I don't even collect gold. Curse you ADHD!
If selling them for cost, you really need to know who they're going to. Otherwise you're likely giving away money to someone else who is more the happy to pocket what is rightfully yours.
Case in point........there is a member here who has graciously offered to sell me one of those currently unavailable Congratulation Sets. He basically sold it to me at 'cost' plus shipping. Terrific and most generous fellow, he shall be 'unmasked' when I receive my treasure. Such an unselfish and caring fellow, he thought of me when I complained about not getting (forgetting?) one. Collectors helping collectors. I've done much the same thing in the past...........
Kudos to that generous fellow! Actually @green18 your post was one that was on my mind when I received the coins yesterday. @BooksB4Coins couldn't agree more...I reckon even at 115 I sold to a reseller looking for maybe that PF70 grade.
What is wrong with making a profit on a coin ? Why is that bad ? If you sold snow shovels, wouldn't you hope you could sell them for more than they cost you?
