I actually just noticed the 5s or Ss and E F all around the rings on obverse. Think I answered my own question. Ill go do some digging.
That is a tough one. I am still thinking tarnish/toning. However I am sure others will chime in that have more experience.
You were absolutely correct. Starring at coins for days you start seeing things. Ha. I hate being a pain but rather look like an idiot here that dumping something important.
I'm sure that there are others here who are willing to help you but it is impolite to hijack another thread. Besides, you will be more likely to get a better response if you start your own thread. Chris
I am definitely guilty of doing it and though about it afterwards. I just felt horrible posting new threads always to be wrong but then again that's what this forum if for. To learn and help each other out. This thread was dead the second I posted and paddy sent me to bed without supper. Lol.
While on damage topic. Here are 2 others I could not determine. I know someone said if its a clad error it would. Be entire side not patch like this nickel. Just curious what would cause this or did someone paint possibly?
I don't think you'd like @paddyman98 's cooking, anyway. He uses a metal detector to gather the ingredients. Chris
Both of these look like a "dryer coin". No, it is incorrect to assume that a coin would have to be missing the entire layer. I have seen specimens of a Kennedy half dollar that was missing a crescent-shaped clad layer along the rim. Chris
So with dryer coins do they only cause 1 side to be affected normally? I was hoping the 1982 was a good find but then again I hope any and all are good finds. Speaking of metals and metal detecting. I have an old ring that was sold at auction claimed to be from Roman times or ancient Greece whatever you call that time period. I obviously was sceptical and so were others but wound up getting fairly reasonable. I took it to antique dealer in Atlanta and he could not determine the type of metal. He did several test and thought there were traces of gold with bronze. I know this is a COIN forum but have you ever heard of gold and bronze being used together.
It's possible that both of the coins were removed from the dryer before too much damage occurred, but I do think I see slight traces of damage to both sides on each coin. I'm just guessing, though, because I've never seen a dryer coin that was only "half-baked". Chris
