A little over a year ago I shared this fully-anonymous victoriatus from Sicily, an example of Cr. 70/1. Until recently, it was my only Victoriatus from the island, but I've now added a second example, Cr. 67/1. While evidence suggests both types were minted on Sicily, the type I'm sharing today was almost certainly engraved by different engravers and comes from a different mint on the island. This type is consistently somewhat clumsily executed and always has a trophy with a skirt with greaves(the two things hanging down below the skirt on either side of the post), a feature that is unique to this particular mint. Roman Republic AR Victoriatus(16 mm, 2.98g). Anonymous, circa 211-208 B.C., Sicilian mint. Laureate head of Jupiter right. Border of dots / Victory right crowning trophy; in exergue, ROMA. Line border. Crawford 67/1; BMCRR Italy 137 As always, feel free to pile on!
Same place (Sicily), separated by only a few years from your coin and from a different people: Hieron II, Kingdom of Syracuse Æ27 Obv: Laureate head of Hieron II left. Rev: ΙΕΡΟΝΩΣ; Horseman galloping right, holding spear; below horse, Φ. Mint: Syracuse Date: 274-216 BC Ref: HGC 2, 1547; CNS II 193
I think this victoriatus, which arrived unattributed in a large mixed lot, has the same Crawford number as your new coin. The portrait is nice. Roman Republic, anonymous AR victoriatus 211-208 BCE, Sicily? 15 mm, 3.2 gm Obv: laureate head of Jupiter right Rev: Victory standing right, crowning trophy; ROMA in exergue Ref: Crawford 67/1
Congrats 'Red'!! That's one of the nicest examples I have seen. My 'Victoriatus' has far less eye-appeal.....
Wow @red_spork, that's a beauty! I don't have any from a Sicilian mint, but I do have this victoriatus with a spearhead from a Southeast Italian mint. Roman Republic AR victoriatus, Anonymous after 211 B.C. 17.3 mm, 3.53 g, 6 h Obv: Laureate hd. of Jupiter r Rev: Victory stg. r., crowning trophy, ROMA in ex, spearhead between them Reference: Cr 83/1a, Syd 223, SR50
