I'm looking to fill a hole in my CAPS Album. Its tough to find nice looking, uncertified examples of the Draped Bust Half Cent but I was looking at the one below. Any thoughts? I'm not above purchasing certified and cracking for the album, I've done it before but I also don't want to drop more than about $125. http://www.ebay.com/itm/401288314616?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
As always, I appreciate everyone's feedback. I owe a few photos from my last couple of purchases that I never posted.
It is a nice coin and would be a nice addition to any collection. I just happened to post a 1804 1/2 cent (Raw), G4 yesterday with subject "Today's Purchases" I just bought it yesterday in a group of Bust Copper Coins.
IMO if you can push your limit to $200 you should be able to get one in Fine. And for comfort purposes I'd go with a slabbed coin; at least you'd know that it's authentic.
Half cents are my favorites! I particularly like collecting the 1804 die varieties/states. The 1804 C5 is my favorite. I call it the "FrankenCent" due to its prominent reverse "scar".
Well, I'm only buying a draped half cent because it's the first hole in my type set album. Also, I think the 1/200th of a Dollar on the reverse is cool. I wasn't tracking authenticity as a problem, I will go certified and crack her out then.
Except for one Draped Bust for my type set I haven't gotten into that issue. I concentrated on the Classic Head Half Cents and completed a date/Red Book variety set.
Reverse is much better than the obverse. Fine grade is a stretch. G-4 obverse VG-8 reverse. I think half cents are under valued. They all have very low mintages, and not sure but prob not very high survival rates also. And the prices are much lower than other coins of similar rarity. I guess people don't like them. I have a few and I really like them.
