Found this neat little thing in my purse today. Been looking for an error like this for over a year. Had to brag about the find! It's definitely an error - no questions about it - but I didn't see any other 1986s with this specifically. Would love to see others or hear any information related to it. I collect pennies but haven't dove much into quarters as of yet.

I say no to D over P. Looks like it could be a tiny Die Chip.

Yeah, yeah I deserve that. Definitely and literally and that whole deal I'm wrong it isn't a TRUE ERROR. I'm excited I found a coin that was obviously messed up, be it a die crack or not. I got wrapped up in the moment. Sorry about the grotesque wording.

It does look like a repunched mintmark. Such things are not my forte- I'm not an error/variety guy, really- but I can see why you'd think there was something going on there. I'd have guessed it was a RPM, personally.

Cool find, regardless. No shame in your having a sharp eye on the lookout for stuff like this.

The P mm has all ways seemed to get defects like this in later die states. I agree with die chip.
I am not aware of any p/d - OMM,
    Happy hunting.

It's damaged in the MM area,
    in my opinion.

Not a die chip or anything else, imo.
