Hi all, I want a nice Marcus Aurelius denarius for my historical figures collection. Could you please post your favourite types? I would love to see them and it would help me make up my mind as to what type to pursue. I would prefer to buy one with a scarce or interesting reverse. Thanks in advance.
Here's my Marcus Aurelius denarius, a Salus, my favourite because its my only Marcus A and it was cheap as dirt
There are quite a few cool examples (I didn't notice any animal examples?) Ummm, I'm always a fan of Minerva ... https://cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=168139
Even though I have dozens and dozens of coins of his wife, I only have one denarius of Marcus himself, this one (3.05g) with the TR P XXI IMP IIII COS III, Aequitas standing left, holding scales and cornucopia reverse, RIC-171, RSC-882. I can't really claim its reverse is particularly historical or interesting, though. One interesting thing I notice is that some 70 years later, several hundred miles away in Marcianopolis near the Black Sea, this provincial coin was struck depicting Aequitas and the goddess is rendered extremely similarly:
I browsed Wildwinds and found the posthumous denarii honoring him (eagles, altars) somewhat more interesting than the typical lifetime fare with personification reverses. I do like the ARMENIA issues, though. And this one with Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus shaking hands. I like the PIETAS reverse with sacrificial implements in this case, because they visually stand out as different from all the "standing figure" personification designs. I see this is "as Caesar". Dunno if that makes a difference or not. Mind you, I have no idea of the relative scarcity or availability of these types. I was just browsing the Wildwinds page. Probably would've done just as well or better to browse VCoins or CNG.
I am merely looking on-line ... but this is another pretty cool type (and rare) https://cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=286681 => Oh, wait-wait-wait ... I found my new favourite https://cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=113795 ... an animal (oh, but he's dead by the time this coin rolled around) => but I still think that Minerva is my favourite (there are some cool Mars examples as well ... quite similar) Thanks => man, now "I" want one!!
Yes, that one with the shields is great. But probably tough. (?) (Edit: sold for $165? Not bad! Not bad at all!) The eagle CONSECRATIO is one of the posthumous types I mentioned. Those and the ones with an altar or pyre that looks like a modern wedding cake are ones that stand out as visually different, but I don't know if a posthumous issue would fit in with @Orfew's plan, here.
I am open to all types. I would prefer something historically interesting like the coin Steve posted which celebrates Aurelius' victory over the Germans in AD 175.
@Orfew , good luck on the Quest! This was my first purchase from @John Anthony when he was first offering up his wares! I got it because it reminded me of a trusty ole lucky coin that someone had in their pocket/bag/satchel/fold of a robe for a long time... Kinda emergency money. Or it was a coin that had a LOT of velocity, traveling from hand-to-hand / transaction-to-transaction which seems really cool to me! I actually carried it in a Saflip in my wallet to show my Grandkids for a while. I AM on the lookout for a "better" one, and I will not give this one up. Rather, I almost feel guilty "upgrading" because of all the cool human hands this one may had passed through... RI Aurelius Marcus 161-180 AE Sestertius S-C

These were the adoptive years so the coin showing Pius had adopted Aurelius is a good choice and not expensive compared to most two headed coins.
