" A backhoe uncovered about 200 U.S. quarters, half dollars and silver dollars dating between 1852 and 1880. The crew also found a gold coin from that era." http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/metro/stories/MYSA082207.1B.coin.discovery.3329726.html
I read about that and saw the picture. Probably unless he finds a real rarity, they'll be silver value only, most of them looked really roughed up and corroded from their stay in the dirt.
gosh hope this one isn't another scam.. last week there was a story about cons going around telling people about 'stuff' under their building.. bilking them out of big dollars... what if this is a 'primer' so others will be 'yeah, sure.. dig up my floor.. jackhammer through the foundation..." after all.. yeah, it's sure cool... but 200 quarters is $50 face... about $4k silver... and in the scam they got $45k.
I'm not sure if I believe this story. San Antonia 150 years ago? I lived in San Antonio and aside from Ft Sam, there was no town even 100 years ago. The Alamo was in the late 1840's as I recall. Ruben
Well it existed 130 years ago, but there wasn't much to the place. San Antonio wasn't really what you'd call a city until about the 1920's when the military bases moved nearby. Not to say someone couldn't have lived in the vicinity 130 years ago, but they'd not have many neigbors. Isn't very far fetched to think that someone who lived in such a remote area probably didn't have easy access to any banks, whether he trusted them or not. Story's at least plausible I think.
Just because the most recent coin was 1880 doesnt mean they had to have been buried in 1880. How many people would have even expected that those coins would have value over face 130 years ago. Those coins could have easily been buried in 1950. Hell I have a load of old silver dollars hidden away, they are all from 1880-1895 but that doesnt mean I hid them in 1895.
