Following are links to two articles by Mike Thorne. Article one is about how to find under-graded coins and specifically what coins to examine - The Secret to Finding Sleepers The second article deals with collecting CC Morgans and discusses rarity, mintage numbers, values etc. - Collecting Carson City Silver Dollars Both of these articles are well worth reading and stuying.
Doug, Thank you for posting those articles! What a great read! I especially liked the article about the Carson City Morgan Dollars, since I have a large collection of Morgan Dollars.....but very few Carson City Morgan Dollars. VERY informative! Now, all I need to do is get some more experience in grading coins. Thanks again! swick
Good articles about the sleepers. What I always wonder is who pays for all that sort of thing? I mean we see aticles all the time by people and I wonder who pays for that. If you write something and want a newspaper, magazine, etc to print it, they charge you. So who charges who for articles like this. They are great and educational, but who pays for that?
In this case, Numismaster paid the author for the articles. But there are plenty of times when an author does not get paid one dime for his work - he writes voluntarily. This is especially true in the on-line world. In printed publications that rarely, if ever, happens. There can be various reasons that an author writes for free, it can be that he wishes to retain his copyright or that he merely wishes to make information and knowledge available to others - for free. Most numismatic authors do a little of both while others will only write for free and some will only write for pay.
I love the article about sleepers. I personally own quite a few VG 1927-S quarters that I think would make fine by PCGS. Not a huge jump but I don't see them falling in value. I also have a local dealer that sells mainly raw coins and is a stickler on his grading. Going to have to start taking a much closer look at his Buffalos. Thanks for sharing the article(s).
Excellent article on sleepers, THANKS Same applys on a lesser scale to VF/XF Lincolns 12-S VF $33 / XF $68 13-S $23 / $44 14-S $34 / $77 Etc
Here they are: http://www.numismaster.com/ta/numis/Article.jsp?ad=article&ArticleId=2747 http://www.numismaster.com/ta/numis/Article.jsp?ad=article&ArticleId=2742 Speedy
That was unusual to say the least. Even in Speedy's message there appears only a blank spot, and I see the links only when using his message as a quote, as above. Only now can I see them.
Two great articles! I have two 1878-cc Morgans passed down from my grandfather, so they are pretty special coins. The sleeper article was a good read also. Very informative.
I'm using internet explorer on Windows XP. Its the strangest thing, those links appeared briefly for me and now they're gone again.
