I managed to sort and record some heirloom coins while visiting my brother over Easter, but was unable to photograph them. If anyone here thinks we should spend more time on them, I guess I'd just like to know where to concentrate our efforts.

I spot checked a few on ebay and they went from $15 to $35, some in very worn condition... Using the primitive guide I found that day, they ranged in condition from Good to Fine, but now I see there are many more categories to apply - so now I'm really stumped.

Just from my limited research, I think he could get more than the $11 his local pawn shop offered. (They gave him a formula of 11x monetary value) Intrinsically, they probably have more value than scrap - if I thought we could end up with average of $20, it seems worth the time of uploading to ebay (but could take forever to realize anything).

Thanks for any input in advance :)

I would not sell them for $11. Any of them. You should get some good advice on this forum, but clear pics are essential.

$11 is pretty damn low, so I'd avoid pawning them off like that.

Wish I had them in front of me - I'll send him your responses, Nathan401 and Hotwheelsearl - hopefully he'll be inspired to take some pictures.

    14 1921 Peace Dollars, Pickin...

$11 is a insultingly low offer, imo. Was this one of those cash and gold places? You would be better off going directly to collectors.

Silver Melt value for those dollars is $13.33 each right now. Silver is not selling well but you could probably do better than $11.00

I always see 5-for-a-hundred listings on eBay, and they sell pretty regularly. You could do that and get your $20/piece. Even factoring in fees and shipping, you're still making more than $11 a pop

In 1921 Peace dollars were only made in Philadelphia so I'm assuming they are Morgans.

You could get quite a bit more than $11 each for them by listing them in the Buy/Sell/Trade forum here (after you have 10 posts -- you're close!). With pictures, you could get more still.

Edit to add: double-check those 1899 dollars, along with all the others, for mint marks. The 1899 without a mint mark is a much better date, getting $50-100 even in well-worn condition.

I know several people on this site that will give you $20.00 a piece for them right now. :)

furham: Sorry, I'm still trying to get them straight - I didn't realize they overlapped.

So if the 1921 -D and -S = Peace Dollars? --- and no mint mark = Philly since they were only marked if they were minted elsewhere??? So confused. :)

-jeffB - good to know! thanks.

also good to know! thanks! :)

They should be $2.00 to $5.00 over spot when selling in most coin shops.

Somebody is trying to rip you off at $11.

Both Peace and Morgan Dollars were minted in Philadelphia in 1921. Only Morgans were minted in Denver and San Francisco that year. The distinction is important, since the 1921-P Morgan is the single most common Morgan and the 1921 Peace is the single rarest Peace Dollar. If your 1921's are Peace Dollars and - even worn - you were only offered $11 for them, you'd be justified (not really) in slapping that dealer. :)

If the 1921's have a D or S mint mark they are Morgan Dollars. The top picture is a Peace Dollar and the bottom picture is a Morgan Dollar. 1923.jpg 1889-1.jpg

If that is the case, the dealer ought to be ashamed of himself/herself. Making a profit as a business is one thing, ripping somebody off when you know better is another. It gives coins dealers a bad name.

A Morgan would be spread-eagle and Peace profile, right? I only separated them by years and didn't notice any differences between the second group (1921 on) - I'm guessing they are Peace dollars. :(

1921's can be either Morgan or Peace. Anything from 1922 on are Peace Dollars.
