OK, I know that posting YET ANOTHER coin of Gordian III´s seems like a joke these days, but before you all ridicule me, here are my humble excuses: 1) I haven´t shown mine yet 2) it has absolutely no patina and shows how the increasingly copperish orichalcum has turned reddish by the 240´s 3) it only cost me 25 Euros and still looks nice enough to me 4) The thought of owning a mediocre Gordian II is more appealing to me than spending big money on an FDC Gordian III Sestertius. 5) I am just posting this while I am doing a writeup for something much more spectacular which I will share with you soon (NOT depending on the number of likes I get for this one, he he) IMP GORDIANVS PIVS FEL AVG / IOVI STATORI S C Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / Jupiter standing facing, head right, holding sceptre in right hand, cradling thunderbolt in left arm Sestertius, Rome 141 30 mm / 17,82 gr RIC 298a, Cohen 111, Banti 37, Hunter 134 By the way, I just read this interesting monograph, possibly the only one written about Gordian III yet (in German only...): Don´t you like the "dynastic" cameo with Pupienus and Balbinus??? Also the book points out that Gordian III probably was the one and only Roman Emperor actually installed by the Army, the Senate, AND the People of Rome!
Very coppery, indeed! I have these darkly patinated examples and it's impossible to tell how brassy or coppery the orichalcum might have been:
I've shown mine ad nausium, so I will refrain from showing them again. However, I think the OP coin is fantastic.
Nice Sestertius @Julius Germanicus ... I have but an As... RI Gordian III 238-244 CE AE As 25mm Hercules S-C
