Hello All, I'm new here and seriously trying NOT to become an avid collector, it will just drain my wallet. My wife and I have been buying 2 sets of regular proof sets and 1 set of silver proof sets since 1999 when the quarters came out. We waned to have these to give to our kids later in life as a start for their collection. My wife has now started buying the coin covers for the new $1 coins but these coins come already in the proof set. My question is: since the quarters are ending in 2008, should we just keep buying the proof sets? or just buy the $1 coin covers? Which one stands to be more valuable in 15yrs or so? Thanks for your help
Hi and welcome to the forum!!! It sounds as if the coin collecting bug has already bit you and your wife. Welcome to our world my friend because now, its too late to turn back...lol. As for your collecting question, I think its a safe bet to say that the proof sets, regular and silver, will be your best bet for keeping their value compared to the $1 coin covers. As coin collecting goes, dont ever count on it to fund your retirement. Its very much hit or miss as future values can never be determined, if it could we'd all be making money at this. Good luck with whatever you choose to do. Hang around a while and join our discussions.
well, keep in mind, after 2008 when the quarters end, other things will come out. Such as the redesign of the 1cent in 2009 (4 different ones) - which Im sure they'll have a special proof set for.
Yeah, what he said. I also think you and/or the kids would like the silver eagles. They're affordable, beautifull, and my personal favorite modern mint product. Good luck.
Thanks for the ultra fast replies guys! Well, like indianhead said below, I think the bug has already bitten us. I have a bad habit of becoming involved in too many hobbies at the same time If the coins weren't so frigging cool, this wouldn't happen! I appreciate the feedback. I just got off the phone with the wife a minute ago, she wants the coin covers for the informational reading that comes with them. <ugh> I want the proof sets because they appear to preserve the coin better and are much easier to store. Plus they come in silver! <cool factor> Prediction: we will buy both and probably add more <sigh> There's a saying on another forum that I've belonged to for a few years that I think will fit here at this one. "Welcome to Coin Talk, sorry about your wallet"
tekjunke welcome to the forum, and say good by to the family... This is also a 12 step program for addictable collectors. I kissed my wallet good by years ago.
Welcome tekjunkie, I started collecting for my kids when I was a kid. Then I never had any kids yet I still collect. I'm a self professed Coin Junkie with a horrible addiction to type coins. Rehab has NOT WORKED. Seriously though, good luck in your endeavors. Be warned though that the kids will not necessarily take an interest in coins. I think it's the genes which is why I STILL question my mom about the mailman. I'm the only addict in my family.
It sounds like what you need is a device for predicting the future. I would suggest for best results, a high quality quartz crystal ball. If you can't afford one, then I would suggest a Super 8 Ball. They are both about the same accuracy. You can buy them the proofs sets but like clembo says, it is "genetic". Either they have the bug or they don't. You can expose them to coins and if they don't have it, they don't have it. If they do have it, once they are exposed you will not be able to stop them. Now if they have it, it can go dormant for awhile betwen the ages of 14 and 40, but it will re-emerge.
Make sure to get your kids into roll searching ! It's like treasure hunting, right at the kitchen table. You could even frame their findings as trophies. Dang, I wish I had kids so I could get them started like that. I better run out and make some.
12 step program... geez... I don't need that ..I can quit anytime... really, I can. I just don't want to. I'm not addicted ~ I just collect for the pleasure. (patting the silver dollar in my pocket... assuring myself it's still there.. whew.. I'm fine, all is well.
coins for kids Howdy, Congratulations. I started buying mint stuff for my grandkids when they were born. I get each proof set, the mint set, a proof silver eagle, and have been putting together the complete set of uncirculated silver eagles in an album. In addition, I'll buy them a commemorative here and there if is looks like it might be interesting to them when they get older. If I could afford it, I'd also buy them the 4 pc gold eagle proof set each year. Now, the above is stash that might (I hope not) be used for college in the future. Once they get old enough, I plan to start them on circulated sets that can be obtained thru small change and roll searching. Nickels are perhaps the easiest, but lincolns are still available also. Dimes and quarters are only available back to 1965. just some ideas, rono
