I don't know a lot about price guides. I know the Grey Sheet is supposedly wholesale pricing. My girlfriend buys me coin magazines like "Coin World" and "Coins" (Coinsmagazine). What are opinions on price guides like these?
What would you think about those magazines whose price guides quoted prices lower than their advertisers? Think about it! Chris
The best way to figure out what you want to pay is to check out past auction results at sites like Heritage Auctions. The price guides can be all over the place. For example, PCGS and NGC can have widely varying prices for the same coin.
Thanks for telling me that. As a newbie I found it to be informative and gives me general info. I know that can't be my only guide. It just seems simple for me at this point...
I agree about Heritage .. when looking at Heritage look at date of sale. You will find many common date coins are not being listed sold recently. Another place to look is Ebay on Ebay's Sold List for PCGS, NGC and ANACS these are a good reference. Greysheet is getting better but these are considered Retail Pricing for most listed. Greysheets are suppose to be Wholesale... this is rarely the case most of the time these are considered Retail for common date Coins. Please remember these prices are good for Buying.. When selling it is good to understand if you go to the trouble to list and display numerous types and grades such as by most Dealers. This is not free and very expensive usually more than just putting your coin in a holder and putting in a case then hoping someone will see it and buy it that weekend. Therefore if you want to sell this coin to a Dealer he will be bound to the very same guidelines when you bought this coin. They will not buy it at a Retail price and you as a buyer should consider this when purchasing. Most Dealers will sell at 3-8% Net above their costs not Gross. If you see this coin generally in a recent Full Retail Magazine, PCGS or NGC list this should be the most you should pay for a properly graded coin.
Yeah, that used to be true, but not any more. The Grey Sheet completely changed the sources that they use to establish the values they list. In today's world the Grey Sheet is not much different than any other price guide. Ignore them, completely ! None of them, not just those, are even close to reflecting reality.
In MY opinion get whatever YOU want, But i would suggest getting a book (s)on the subject you like.Yeoman/Redbook(I prefer Whitman REDBOOK) are good for all over coins. If you enjoy EAC like me you'll need a specific book such as Q.David Bowers COLONIAL and AMERICAN EARLY COINS.PLUS joining the ANA is a good move also (MY opinion) ANA Member #3183756 HAPPY HUNTING TO ALL
