I'm a sucker for Victoria/Nike and in this condition, the price was right. However, with no legible legends I've had a time trying to identify it. Here is the coin 21mm and 11.5g This is the closest match I've been able to find after looking at around 1500 coins. I'll assume I'm wrong and hope someone can point me in the right direction. Jim
I started out thinking Alexandria and it's the right size to be a hemidrachm but I just couldn't find a match. I don't have RIC books so I checked V-coins, CNG and Wildwinds to find what I did.
Your thought process was spot on. It is from Alexandria and it is a hemidrachm. I don't see any in CNG's archives or ACsearch. I didn't search Wildwinds. You won't find it in RIC because that is Roman Imperial Coinage and this is provincial. There aren't as many online resources for provincials. RPC has limited volumes online and fortunately Hadrian is among what they've made available. You'll find some of them there. I have Emmett, Dattari, Milne, and a few other reference books for Roman Egypt so let me know if you want further assistance with the full attribution.
Yes, that's it Emmett number is 1094. Yours is probably year 16, like the second picture. You can see a bit of the 6. This hemidrachm with Nikey "flying" (or advancing) left was issued in Hadrian's regnal years 2, 6, 16, and 19. Years 2 and 6 are rated R5 (highest rarity ranking in Emmett's scheme); years 16 and 19 are R1 (least rare). Given that common things occur commonly, yours is probably year 16 rather than year 6. As has been said many times, "book rarity" and reality may be different things so take that with a grain of salt.
