The second of the 2 nickel I was gifted. Again I know nothing about these except it is a 1st year. In fact this is the only Liberty Head in my collection. What do you think it grades? Thanks again...Mont
I don't think it is, but I could be wrong and here's a couple sites.. https://www.ngccoin.com/coin-varieties/nickels/liberty-nickels-vscid-20/ http://www.libertynickels.org/variety.php
I see a weakly struck XF, maybe Au coin, but encourage the explanation of the whizzing, I don't see it.
XF with claims to AU. No whizzing. Can't tell if it was dipped. Doubt it as dipping nickel doesn't do a whole lot but make the coin dull. I see what I think is glue (or something) residue on the reverse Not the purttiest dang coin I'se ever seen but the pics are nice!
Referencing it to my best book on shields and Liberty head nickels...by Peters & Mohon now out of print....it's an 19.4 1 is triple punched s.corrected n. 2nd 8 punched n. Corrected s. RPD. At the time of publishing this was a new find and no rarity assigned. 1995 published date.
This is a terrific denomination with a great story, so this is a nice gift in attractive condition (say, XF45). This is the first issue for the series, and does not contain the word Cents. Enterprising hucksters would gold plate these and try to pass them off as new $5 gold pieces to those not familiar with the new design. The mint was forced to redesign the reverse and add the word CENTS. Thus 1883 has two main styles. If you only have one this is a good one.
It was a brain fart when typed! I quoted dwhiz and I meant to agree it was cleaned. Whizzed stuck in my head. Whizzing is when metal has been moved around or added to a coin to cover up scratches or other issues.
