A friend on another board sometimes gives me a heads up when he finds a coin I might be interested in before he offered it to others. I have been looking for an interesting Hadrian denarius for my historical figures collection and this one certainly fits the bill. It is a scarce coin. I found 5 on acsearch, and 2 in the CNG archives. It was the reverse that attracted me to this coin. The figure of aeternitas is holding the heads of Sol and Luna. Please post your coins of Hadrian. Hadrian, AR Denarius AD 135 3.39 g Obv: IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG Laur. bust of Hadrian right with light drapery on far shoulder Rev: AET AVG (in field) P M TR P COS DES III Aeternitas standing left holding heads of Sol and Luna Sear 3458 Ric 48
I have none. . I am open to suggestions for a cool and affordable type for Baby's First Hadrian. Eternity juggling the Sun and Moon is pretty sweet. Great coin!
that is a nice denarius with an uncommon reverse. i only have one coin of him, a copper As(some call it a dupondius, but no radiant crown)
Cool Hadrian, orfew. That type always catches my fancy. Am I seeing things or does the reverse legend on your coin read "DES IIII"?? Hadrian had many cool scarcer types. If I had to specialise in only one emperor, it'd be Hadrian. Oh wait, someone's already doing that . HADRIAN AR Denarius. 2.98g, 19.1mm. Rome mint, AD 119-125. RIC 75a. O: IMP CAESAR TRAIAN HADRIANVS AVG, laureate bust right. R: P M TR P COS III, Oceanus reclining left on a dolphin, crab claw horns on his head, holding an anchor in his right hand. Ex E.E. Clain-Stefanelli Collection
Nice provenance on your coin. I have 3 from that collection. As for my coin, it was sold to me as DES III.
Nice find! It's the first time I've seen Aeternitas on a Hadrian denarius, and the first time I've seen her in that aspect, holding the heads of the gods that represent the sun and moon. Great coin!
That is a great coin @Orfew , cool reverse: Eternity? Nice. How about a Quinarius? Victory is sitting down on the job, though! RI Hadrian AR Quinarius 1.30g, 14mm Rome, AD 119-122 cuirassed laureate COS III Victory seated wreath palm RIC 108a
@Bing That is a cool example. The difference between our coins is the reverse legend. Mine is COS DES III and yours is COS III.
Because of Oki's long, long running Hadrian thread I am running out of new Hadrian's to post. I suppose most would start with a coin from the travel series. It is not new here but no one would make their first Hadrian a fourree brockage so that is what I'll post here. As Oki's other Hadrian susperpost will attest, we should all be close to out of fresh Provincials. I'll offer here an Alexandrian obol with reverse of Harpocrates year 22 which has been shown before. Hadrian most certainly does have many wonderful types in both series.
That's a really great pickup Orfew. I have never seen that type before. I thought I would have to only buy the travel series to be interested in Hadrian. +1 more apparently.
