Just received this coin today. Purchased from a Member Here. 1879-S Rev of 1878 in a PCGS "Rattler" Holder Graded MS-61. A nice addition to my Collection
Very nice! I've been wanting one in MS condition for quite some time. So many coins to get and so little time (read money). It's definitely a VAM and a top 100 variety for sure. Now which one is it....
Very nice coin. Sure looks PL in pictures but I know they had more loose PL standards back then so the fact that it wasn't graded as such leads me to believe it would fall short today. I learned that with a PL Morgan I bought in a rattler and a poster here mentioned the looser standards back then and they were spot on, mine is def not PL today. Still though, great eye appeal especially for a 61.
A fuzzy finger reflection does not make it PL. If I saw clearly defined ridges on the finger I would say yes but even then all parts of the field would need to mirrored to PL like standards. That bust is frosty but the fields are only semi-PL so it didn't, and won't, get the designation
Put that coin on it side and see what shows up in the fields, and if anything shows up, it's proof-like ....... Then just do the pencil trick, and see if that shows up in the fields, my money on at least proof-like ........
Wasn't planning on starting a argument here LOL. PL or NOT I'm happy with the coin. Got it at a great price. I didn't buy it as a PL I just thought it was a nice coin. scmedic
Nice old rattler, although I agree with the frosty devices, the fields, especially the obv. are not mirrored enough imo. I would keep it in that holder if it was mine. cool coin regardless.
There's no fighting going on here, I'm just trying to help determine if it's proof-like . That's the best thing to do, to help out newbies ....
I am sure that if the fields had the same reflection of the circular bag mark behind the head, this would be a no brainer. I would keep it in the rattler myself.
